Roaster to Buy?
Published (2009-11-21 11:50:00)
how do you determine which to go with? Instead of taking a class from Ambex or Diedrich, I'd use that time and money to visit and buy coffee from as many roasters as possible. Most roasters are happy to share their experience with you. From there narrow down to one or two roasters whose coffee you like the best; whatever brand those roasters are using that would be the brand to go with. Heck they might even share with you how they roast....

Diedrich Roasters

Thanks. That'll be more of a last step, if it gets that far. Right now I think it would be best to get independent and non-biased information. Any list of customers the manufacturer gives would be ones they're confident will give a good report. I'm looking for the problems as much as the strengths of Diedrich roasters.

Well I have been using a BUNN VPR drip machine for about 6 weeks now. It works very well, but does flow a bit fast. Lots of people love BUNN units, but have the same complaint. Most try to alter this by simply blocking a few of the holes in the showerhead with a piece of toothpick. Some of the BUNN units allow the showerhead to be switched and BUNN makes lower flow showerheads just for this reason, but experimenting with the toothpick seems to...

If you were in a commercial environment, backflushing every day with cleaner would be fine ( I think ccafe probably means a water backflush every day). In the domestic setting, backflushing once every 2-3 weeks with cleaner (plus a pure water backflush every day) will be fine. More often than that and you could create problems. You say...

1) What effect does the air speed have on the roast? Does a higher air speed speed up or slow down the roast?? It depends on how high is your flame. If your flame is high enough then air entering drum is hot, higher speed will speed up the roast. This is the same principle as a convection over. If your flame is low then the air entering roasting drum will have a cooling effect thus slow down the ...

Hello,
The roaster that you're considering looks pretty, but I have my doubts about how functional it will be.
Here is a link to a page that compares the features of other kinds of home roasters.

I've heard a few people say their doctors told them to cut down on coffee to control their cholesterol. I figure one or two cups a day isn't going to kill anyone. Cut down on the cholesterol in other ways instead. Alan Adler, the guy who invented the AeroPress, refuses to offer any other filter with his product because of health concerns with coffee oils. I don't know how much this helps you ...

I personally won't. It is not within my budget. There are plenty of single brewing devices out there that are way cheaper and can compete well against Clover. If I were to spend that kind of money, I upgrade my roaster and get a few top of the line grinders.

Hi! I have used both Ambex and Diedrich roasters with much more experience on the Ambex. My Ambex experience is with the YM-2 and a YM-10 with and without their complete profiling system. I have some experience on the Diedrich IR-7. I have attended both of their short courses. At the time I attended, both courses helped develop basic skills and also hands on roasting. The hands on portion gave a ...
