Sigh.  So I had a call last week from someone responding to my ad; he wanted a cat, a male preferably.  I gave him a male and a medium-sized litter box and some food to get him started, and the rabies certificate and tag.  He phoned me again, worrying about the tag; it said 2008.  Yes, I said, it is good for three years after the date on the tag, which is the date of the shot.  I explained how to...

No action the past two days fixing the leaky tub. Tub expert is expected to arrive here tomorrow, supposedly. Hmph. I have unpacked more stuff, spent time with Mama, niece and great niece, totally avoided going to the Uni, hung more pictures and such, and scoped out deck furniture at Home Despot. Tomorrow, husband's large and strong nephew is coming to supper. Yea! Someone to help me break down the big heavy table that should not...

So I'm back from my holiday trip and am in a state of paralysis or ennui, or both. First, my place needs cleaning, which I planned to do this morning, but instead I read the New York Times cover to cover (or byte to byte since it was online) and watched all the online videos about Africa and China, while, of course, intermittently checking new postings on the fora. Now I am posting ...

Most of us are now at least half-way through the summer break, and are starting to turn our thoughts to the upcoming academic year. It is a time for resolutions! I'll start: I resolve NOT to procrastinate on my grading & to faciliate this resolution I resolve to write a grading rubric before I give the students an assignment. I also resolve to work on my writing/research projects...

Don't get your undies in a knot, as this post is tongue in cheek, rightie? I was exhausted from teaching and stopped into a fast food establishment (which shall remain unnamed), and noticed something odd. There were about a half dozen employees scurrying around in addition to the cashiers. They were all well in excess of their normal weight. As in easily 200+ lbs each. The gentleman ...

So I'm working with a colleague in the department on a study that should generate a couple of papers -- one written by me and one by him. I was able to collect some samples that are relevant to his work, and he was the one with the methodological skill to analyze my samples. The problem is that I'm realizing how clueless he is with statistics. To provide a hypothetical example, ...

This is a question specifically about oral contraceptives. My new doctor (who is not an obgyn but a DO, I'm not even quite sure what that is) recently refused to write me a new prescription for oral contraceptives, specifically to avoid the risk of blood clotting, which is apparently much higher for any women over 40. I've heard this caution for women who smoke (I do not), but this ...

I'm looking for any input on a weird car issue I'm having. I've been driving quite a bit the last few weeks and my Engine Coolant Level Low light came off and on. I had another issue as well, so I took it in to the Saturn dealer where I'm staying (I don't know the local mechanics here) and they changed the coolant. When I was driving around today after picking the car up, I noticed...

Frequently there are occasions here on the fora in which you might like to interject one pithy or annoyed comment into a thread, but you doesn't want to get sucked into an argument, have that thread turn up forever on your "show replies to your posts" page, get dragged into a general trainwreck, or publicly announce your association with an unpopular opinion or action. Okay. So if Spork didn't live in the southeast and I didn't live in the northeast, who knows, we might have something going. Ablewasi has been kidnapped.
