What are your holiday travel plans?

Ooh, haircut. Good idea. This year I'll be travelling from the kitchen to my easy chair. Don't commisserate; it's the way I want it. Kitty will be yelling at me, claws sunk imploringly into my knee, with an abject "I'll DIE if I don't get some turkey" look in the biggest glistening show of eyes that she can muster. Of course, far be it from me to play Scrooge to her street waif.

Butterfly Jig Question
Published (2009-11-25 04:41:00)
Ceili bands became what they are because a parish hall is lot bigger than a farmhouse kitchen or a crossroads, so the music had to get louder to fill the room. In a house party, a single instrument often sufficed. If more musicians were present, they'd be as likely to spell each other off playing alone as they were to play together. That wouldn't work in a dancehall, so bands were formed to make the music louder, and piano and snare...

Hi Polly, welcome. Without going into detail, I'd suggest that you contact Pat O'Riordan and have him take a look at your whistle before you think about giving it up, even if you opt for another whistle as well. PM me if you need contact info. Good luck!

The "sound" of whistle...

I like going to the hardward store and cupping and popping the palm of hand on the end of the different sizes of pvc piping. A sales clerk always stops by to see what's going on.

Are there generally accepted "sounds" or aural characteristics of the various materials used in making whistles? In other words, can it be said the aluminum is softer or more mellow than brass or nickle? Or that wood is more "airy" but quieter than plastic? (I just made those up as examples.) For example... Tony Dixon make two versions of his "Traditional" whistle, one in brass and one in ...

Yes, the usual roll... we've been there done that. But, lately I find that it's pretty unfriendly for me to do this roll when coming from A down to F#: first tapping then cutting. Do you first tap then cut on F#? Essepecially when coming down from above..? first cut then tap is of course naturally friendlier, but can really sound bad when you want a progressive smooth rythmic pattern.

Future's already here. I watched some program on a "health" (?) channel a month or two ago about men who have girlfriends who are made of some sort of squishy person-feeling stuff. They put makeup on them, dress them, talk to them, have private moments. After a few years they have to be shipped back to whoever it is that makes them for refurbishing. One guy was even crying as he crated her up and...

E as well. Sometimes you'll get people doing pseudo-crans, or double cut rolls, or similar things on any of the notes, really. Keep in mind that "cran" is a problematic catch-all for a wide variety of movements. Some people cut using AGFA, AFGA, AGF, GFG, FGF, etc etc... basically there's no hard and fast rule about it. I found quite a while ago that it is better to simply think of everything...

Of course we do. We share good experiences all the time. Bad ones are equally valuable to know about, maybe moreso. This is the kind of information that makes these forums worthwhile. Thanks for that.
