I meant this to include the period before the opening of the gap. Obviously, there will be no manned flights on US vehicles during the gap, since that is the definition of the gap Oh I know what the definition is...but they way you wrote,...

I could see this traveling from a earth orbiting platform, example ISS, to the lunar surface/ base and back again as a form of a cargo transport vehicle. 2. v vThis design looks like something Spacex could build right now (possible with current engine technology). Spacex is about to enter into the cargo transport business to LEO. 3. Why not expand on the idea further? Spacex...

Armadillo 1100ft. flight

IPA stands for isopropyl alchohol. Armadillo uses Ethanol and LOX (plus helium for pressurization) for their Lunar Lander Challenge vehicles ( http://space.xprize.org/ng-lunar-lander-challenge/2008/teams/armadillo ). They have used a peroxide/methanol monopropellant mix in the past and have even tested a methane/LOX engine as well.

Quote from: Retired Downrange on 11/21/2009 07:50 PM I wonder if the plan is to leave some of the U.S. EMU space suits on the ISS when the Shuttle retires? They already do and rotate the suits with ones launched by Shuttle, service the ones from ISS, use them again and so on. This will be just a small part of the old logistics problem starting late next year. Some time after Columbia, US suits/airlock on ISS were "no go"...

From what I understood: - high thrust, like chemical / NTR AND - high ISP (= low fuel consumption) like electric thrusters The best of both worlds. Plus very, very high ISP = 30 000 seconds, Ie 10*ion thrusters, 100*times chemical ! The wrong side: with an ISP so high, you need a LOT of energy. Big nuclear reactor might do the job. IMHO, molten salt reactor + VASIMR will be the best ...

Wouldn't be the first time a button-down type got a job in a casual environment and couldn't handle the lack of people impressed with their wardrobe and 'cultured' demeanor. The lack of ego stroking is too much for some of them to handle. I've seen this several times in medicine - some physician goes from an upper crust hospital to a big city teaching hospital where they're as likely to run ...

What would be the dimensions of a "Sea Dragon" class launch vehicle to deliver 50 or 100 tons to orbit? If it would fit existing launch facilities like the VAB. Would a clean sheet rocket like a "Sea Dragon" pressure fed vehicle be much less expensive to operate and orbit?

When you write "it would have been very close" I assume you mean that it would have been risky, or even impossible for them to succeed? I agree. Although much of what has been written about their program focuses on their N-1 Moon rocket, keep in mind that we know much less about the development of their actual lander. Think about how much we know about the difficulties of designing the LM. We...

Ross, Why are you setting your thrust offset on your LAS simulation towards the horizontal. You get much better results if you thrust *up* to get above the falling debris field. Try it with a -10 degree offset instead of a +10 degree offset.
