On the BMW board a LOT of people are in the 10-12% area, so I am interested to see where we are.

Note that the BMW M3 has a V8. Roger Smith is long gone so you can forget airy thought at the top leading to things like the 368 cid V8-6-4 or a 4.1 liter engine in a 5,000 pound car. I agree that Northstar has another generation in it to cover where the High Value V8 would have taken over. Some of the thinking that I was seeing in the High Value V8 was modular thinking, like the Ford Modular V6-V8 family where the same factory builds engines...

How about the standard tip: checking for codes? Sure, it is possible to get better gas mileage if you skip emission control systems (like the cat), but then you also have to program the PCM accordingly. Unless you have reprogrammed the PCM (few people would pull that off, I think), it is still programmed for having a cat, which means that it will try to maintain the stoichiometric ratio of gas to air (meaning that there is just the right...

QUOTE (Jan Olsson @ Nov 7 2009, 03:46 PM) Many testers feel that the Cadillac V6 isn't as smooth as the competitors V6 engines, then they test the Northstar engine (IMG: style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif ) Personally I feel that a 90° V8 that can be fully counter balanced with respect to the 1:st AND 2:nd order of vibrations always will be superior to a V6 who in many cases need to be counter-balanced for a smooth run....

voltage range
Published (2009-11-06 16:01:00)
yesterday on the highway it went up and down. for awhile it was at 10.8 and did not waver. oh oh, i thought. that can't be good. than it went up to 13.5 and we know how much of a pain it is to remove. seems to me the a/c compressor is in the way if you take it out thru the wheelwell. i had the a/c compressor off this summer. not real hard. i think if you take out the cooling fans, it can be reached if you reach down far enough.

Stereobyte i Cadillac STS -94
Published (2009-11-09 11:56:00)
Tjenare!

And also take a peek on Amazon.com for the parts... I've been finding LOTS of parts that are being sold from closed/liquidated dealers at total give-away prices (even cheaper than RockAuto, who I love!) Just type the part number right into Amazon... it's sort of surprising what you'll find!

tempeture drop on 3rd gear, normal?
Published (2009-11-07 14:23:00)
QUOTE (growe3 @ Nov 7 2009, 11:28 AM) Assuming the temperature gauge to be correct (the temps are well within normal) , the water pump belt may be slipping slightly. As the engine speeds up from the lower gear ratio, it will move a little more coolant through the system. 1. Check your water pump belt for wear, and cracking. It should be flexible, and without cracks on the inside of the belt. A hard belt will tend to slip, a...

Hej Olsson!

QUOTE (Jims_97_ETC @ Nov 6 2009, 03:03 AM) GM has been making DOHC 4-valve engines for daily drivers since the Quad 4 came out in 1988 so they have the formula as well as anyone. I expect that we will be seeing 4-valve engines for a long time. Sadly the Quad 4 was another example of a head gasket/head bolt failure just waiting to happen. Most of those engines died before 80,...

That sounds low to me, for that matter anything below 12 volts for any length of time especially at highway speeds.

Yes, its normal, dropping the selector to 3rd increases the RPMs, there by turning the WP faster, there by pumping more coolant, through the radiator. I have witnessed this myself.. By the way, its a common misperception that a water pump goes bad, in that it PUMPS LESS, and that is NOT true at all, water pumps don't go bad in their function they go bad in terms of their ability to hold...

/Jan L....

I need to drop my carriage to timesert/stud the block. I am thinking of making a dolly the size of the carriage about 8 inches high, out of 4 by 4's with wheels on it. I plan to drop the engine carriage on the dolly with the bolt system and raise the body of the car off of the engine/tranny assembly with an engine hoist and roll the carriage into the garage. What do you guys think of ...
