Loading the 297/230 Morris
Published (2009-11-28 15:28:23)
Gert, As was pointed out the Morris charge was Curtis and Harvey Diamond No. 2, not prismatic. When I checked references I found one referecne that said Diamond No. 2 was a black powder and one reference that said Diamond was smokeless. Most creditable reference just didn't say for sure. One reference selling an old powder can claimed it blackpowder, but there was noting on the can being sold to support that contenetion. One thing about...

Well Douglas if you Google it, you'll find lots of references to C&H Diamond as the highest quality BP. I find no mention of anyone thinking it is nitro.

The "brown" prismatic powder actually has an eliminate of cellulose as it was not pure wood charcoal but partly charcoaled rye which still contained cellulose so was not truly seen as black powder but did emulate smokeless in as much it gave a much cleaner burn producing a better power to burn ratio and reduced smoke just does not say how much less smoke. I suppose it is all about where you want to split the hair so's to...

Next project?
Published (2009-11-28 19:37:26)
I laid out some parts alongside my Nep Francotte. I could fit an SMLE buttstock with a bit of work but not impossible. I could likely squeeze it into SMLE wood. However, when I got towards the front end I see where the nosecap will have to be extensively modified to go onto the forend with the large diameter barrel. If I can't get the right look then I probably won't bother. Oh well, that's probably why I haven't seen one...

If I can get it apart, you will indeed Right now I'm basing my description on what I can observe externally, hearing parts move, and feeling resistance on the parts as they move.

I'm done!

Perhaps this would be a good time for some discussion regarding the choices of case lube used by our members. For common cartridges Ive successfully used RCBS for about 30yrs. but for some heavy duty jobs I 'felt it out' in short strokes until it wasnt really performing, then wiped clean and switched to Imperial Sizing Wax. Even it needed caution, I thought, though I did complete the project. FWIW: I prefer case dents from too much...

Happy Thanksgiving

Just wanted to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving, may it be a very warm and happy one ( family warm) and may the Lord's Spirit be with all of us. God Bless guys and I hope I haven't offended anyone.

Snider parts now available at IMA
Published (2009-11-24 00:29:01)
Douglas, I was actually defending their pricing. It's in line with the market and other vendors who are selling Snider parts. And yes, you can make a firing pin if you have a lathe and the dimensions or a sample to work from, but for most of us, paying the $25 is cheaper than equipping a machine shop. I do appreciate IMA making parts available. This is something we've been looking forward to since they announced the Nepal cache. And...

Yes, the name and initials for the Arsenal changed around 1870 from AE (Arsenal do Exercito=Army Arsenal) to FA (Fabrica de Armas=Arms Factory). Fernando

Douglas and Richard - thanks for your confirmation that the A version is a straight bore. I was worried that I had something wrong. I had already slugged the
bore from top to bottom, without any signs of looseness as the slug reached the bottom. To be quite sure, I shall have to use the method whereby one puts a
"solid" case into the chamber and upsets a bullet in the throat area by dropping a ...

It would be chambered for the .476. If you look down the barrels they
almost appear to be smooth bored, but in fact they are oval with a twist
that can be seen if you look at them with an oblique light source.

This gun has been slate for upgrade to 17HMR every year!! It hasn't happened! I have put close to 7000 rounds through it now, and I am firmly committed to
keeping it 17HM2. Kill rate is I estimate in the range 70-80%.
If I were to need more power, I would skip the 17 HMR and move into something in the hot 22 Hornet-218 Bee class such as K-Hornet or Mashburn Bee.

I have never seen a firearm chambered for the long body long, but the other 2 were both used. I recently got a Webley conversion cylinder and barrel for a WG.
It is chambered for the long (with short body) A friend just bought a MK III 6" made as a 297/230. That he just discovered is chambered for the short. So
far all of the rook rifles I've gotten are chambered for the long, but the Morris ...

I think your friend may have acquired something extraordinarily rare!
There were several German gunsmiths named Tanner. The one in question is Heinrich Tanner, of Frauenfeld, Thurgau, Switzerland, who was factory manager and
partner in "Martini Tanner & Co, Frauenfeld" around 1864. This is a commercial rifle, not arsenal production, and Tanner was factory manager long
before the Martini-Henry...

Where's DD one for him to test! mind you if one used fg black powder in reloads it would keep the pressure down or even make a chamber sleeve (fitted
permanently) to take .32 pistol rounds but full strength .303 not likely.

That's not a Martini!
It's at best variant of a Peabody.
Since you are deeply crushed that it isn't a Martini, you can send it to me for disposal. I'm your friend, you can trust me.

I think what appears to be part of the trigger guard is actualy background for a number of reasons. Once discounted and allowing for the fuzzy picture, I
think we have a Werder Aptiertes.

Good luck with your pinfire, Pinky. I picked up an absolutely beauty in twelve gauge last year. I've just finished a batch of turned brass hulls for her.
It's a pretty neat design if I may say so myself, using small rifle/pistol primers and a fixed firing pin. Pictures to follow...
