Villanueva had seven losses as a relief pitcher last year. That means that seven times he was handed the ball with the score tied or the Brewers leading and he gave up the winning run. The guy cracks under pressure. I know you know what small samples are, you just seem to ignore them oftentimes. Villanueva is what he is, a decent MR with FIPs & xFIPs in the low to mid-4s. MR production fluctuates a lot from year to year, so I'm...

CV barely had a sub 5 ERA last year as a reliever, so he struggled all year. Hoffman, Hawkins, Vargas, Coffey, and Stetter would seem to be locks, and Narveson is out of options and would seemingly be kept after his superb stint as a SP. Needless to say, barring injury, CV is fighting for a spot.

Any interest in Kelly Johnson
Published (2009-12-13 16:47:08)
I agree- Johnson has been one of my guys to target for a couple of years now, and I'd think he'd be a great asset for the Brewers if they could fit him in the budget. That said, I don't think the Brewers would be able to offer him enough guaranteed playing time right now to get him to choose Milwaukee over other teams that have a big need at 2B.

Marioano Rivera lost 6 games in 2001, 5 in 2006 and 5 in 2008. Hoffman lost 6 in 1993, 5 in 1996, 7 in 2000, 5 in 2002, 6 in 2005, 5 in 2007, 6 in 2008. Those guys crack under pressure. Not that I disagree with you, CV tends to walk too many in high leverage situations, it is just that looking at losses is such a bad methodology for discussing the issue.

Brewers sign LHP A.J. Murray

Solid addition to Nashville staff. As last year showed, guys like that tend to find their way to Milwaukee at some point if they produce ala Burns, Smith, etc last year.

endaround wrote: Wang may never pitch effectively again. And even if he does it still maybe a year removed. Wouldn't be a bad minor league contract signing though if the Brewers do it. But I think Wang's marketing dollars that he gets will be lower if he goes to somewhere like Milwaukee. I believe Wang gets some money for publicity and it is dependent on the city he is playing in. I wouldn't be surprised if either the Mets,...

If the Brewers set their major league payroll budget at $80 million, it would mean any salary they plan on owing to a player between now and then end of the
2010 season. That includes all the players that come and go on the 25-man roster (which could be any combination of players that are or will be on the 40-man
roster this season), plus the $8.55 mil they owe to Bill Hall, Braden Looper and ...

Villanueva having 2 could be interesting. Would it be more valuable to have
him as long reliever or to have him return to starting in Nashville and
provide rotation depth that could be called on at any time without a 40 man
adjustment?

My feeling is that the team is best off by showing steady competitiveness within their division. Keep people interested in coming to the park, buying
jerseys, etc. Then, when you feel you have the chance, you roll the dice every now and then (like the Sabathia trade). Maybe take on some salary, make a
signing, etc. This means you never get to sign three guys like Teixiera, Sabathia and Burnett ...

He's been very good except when he was recovering from his injury. I'd hate to see a 4th year.

Yeah, they seem to be. They shed a bunch of payroll last season (trading Peavy, etc) and seem intent on slashing further. They're in total rebuild mode at
this point after...

I'd be all for signing Webb and Bedard to one year incentive laden deals (perhaps with team options for a second year). We could then use our trading chips
(Hardy, McGehee or Gamel) to land pitching prospects that we can add to those already within our system (ones who are a year or two away from being in the
majors). The hope being that in a year or two, we can fill in our rotation with ...
