Arkham and Doom are fairly complicated to jump right into. LNOE wouldn't be too bad, but what kind of games do you think your group might enjoy? Are you skipping Settlers for any reason? It is basically the first go to game when jumping into the hobby. If you're just looking for "ameritrash" stuff that's a whole different story.

Many games don't take politics or suffering out of it, but that maybe more of a tangent. The honest truth is wargames don't simulate anything, just as books don't simulate warfare either (or podcasts for that matter ). However they can portray some of the metaphors of the conflict.
