Rad - Love to hear your energy. Congrats on checking your RA! I hope she comes through! Good luck. Hi folks, I checked in with an interviewee & we're meeting next week to hear his thoughts on my work. I am a bit nervous & excited at the same time. Since I am documenting these historical lived experiences, I want to be respectful. And yet, I know either way I cut it ... I do have authority & it is ultimately my...

December 2009 Writing Challenge

Hello All, I was walking back from lunch which I took at 3 pm when I realized that I am an academic teenager. I know a lot but not enough to be completely self sufficient. I complain and confront my academic mentors when, for the most part, they are juggling surviving while wanting the best for me. I broke a record for writing an abstract. My adviser highly encouraged that I submit a symposium proposal at our bi-annual conference. She has...

Today was not a working day for me because of my child care/salary issues but I wanted to check in to cheerlead! It seems like there was great progress today. I especially want to say yay Manoaprof for pushing to do 10 minutes and actually doing it and then 10 more! How often do we tell ourselves that 10 minutes is not worth the effort. Well it looks like phase 1 of my salary crisis is coming to an end. I sent another complaining email to my...

Going on Sabbatical
By Lee Tobin McClain
Ah, sabbatical. The word flows from the tongue. Months of freedom to work on academic pursuits stretch out before you like a broad green field. Look closer,

Hi calmstorm,
I'm so sorry that you are miserable in your current position. Can you say a bit more about the things you are unhappy about as it will be easier to discern
if they are institution specific or pervasive in academic institutions.
Thus far, you have said:
1. required 5 days on campus and
2. over-bearing chair.
I think the former is not pervasive in academe, however norms ...
