Always try and gather as many features as you can and don't hang the whole id on one that doesn't seem right. As you rightly pointed out the head looked good - no other duck has a head pattern like that, then check the rest of the plumage features and you'll find that (sometimes!!) you'll find it easier to get a positive id

I've seen the Bustard and Courser on the plains near Teguise - also Stone Curlew, though they aren't always easy. Early morning is a must before the heat haze kicks in. I saw Canary (11 years ago mind) at Mirador de Haria, though whether these are truly wild birds isn't known. The saltpans at Janubio are a must, while the cliffs nearby at El Golfo are where I've seen Barbary Falcon - there are also Barbarys in the north at...

My copy of the Eastern Brazil Sigrist guide isn't quite coming apart but some of the pages are quite loose. The van Perlo guide seems a lot more solid to me.

Hi MÃcheál
A very small number of people have licences to take gull eggs for human consumption. It is tightly controlled and the numbers of eggs allowed to be taken is restricted each year.
Gull eggs used to be eated a lot more than now, but due to conservation concerns the practice has been restricted.

Just back from a lovely two days in glorious sunshine.Saw the Shrike at Royden on Thursday so didn't have to drag my wife around the bog After lunch at Holme I was rewarded by being left at Titchwell while my wife did the galleries and shops along the coast. Great day and all the usual birds.
Friday was spent along the coast to Cley and Salthouse but no Snow Buntings. No Black Brant either or ...

Welcome aboard, although it appears to be a brief visit perhaps you'll find something of interest in the wonderland that is BirdForum!

The hide at the end of the golf course which gives good views of the brent
geese now has a combination lock if you would like the number let me know.
To get to this you park at the driving range car park and walk through to
the end of the eden golf course. it is on the right in amongst some trees.
Or you could just park at the end of the west sands and walk round to see
the brent geese.

Nice photos there Neil.
I've not seen a Green Woodpecker for ages, it's one of my "bogey" birds have to try and get down to the Chase again sometime next week see if I have more luck.
Thanks for the tip on the Starling roost at JCB, Dean, I think I'll try and get up there to have a look this afternoon as it's not far from me.

We seem to have the CT, GT, BT's coming in one group, followed by the Chaffies, Goldies & Greenies. Then one big group of Sparrows. Makes a change from about 2 weeks ago when there wasn't much visiting.
Even though the increased number of Birds, the Sparrowhawk seems to have lost his timing and visiting when there is nothing about. Yesterday he sat in the rain for over an hour and still ...

Hey mate
Nice read, I for one could not justify the cost and weight and time needed to buy a dslr against a Lumix dmc-fz38 or such.
If with a little practice i can get shots half as god as yours i'll be happy with a semi compact thing:)
