Sooner or later some nanny state is going to make 'homebrew' biodiesel very expensive in terms of the insurance required. Municipalities are also looking for ways to make up for lost revenues so one can expect that permits will be required to make BD. All to protect public safety, of course.

Myself and Double D have done some rudimentary experiments (at least mine were ) and noticed no difference in cloud point after a softwood chip treatment. See HERE . Jon

Oooh, make my life simple ! Fuel sender, available at any auto store or a bazillion places on line. Hook it up to your tank and run a 12V wire to the sender guage and the hot wire to a battery. On the battery end you can use an alligator clip to power on/off. TADA. It don't get much simpler (and reliable) than that. Couple it with FuelFarmer's idea and it can be operated remotely, you won't ever even have to see it (but there...

When we change the filter on my dads truck we just crack the air bleed bolt and stick the vacuum pump hose on it.

Call for BD producers using acid

quote: Originally posted by dkenny: buckeye, in your low methanol/acid are you using the sodium bentionite? -dkenny Yes, bentonite is helpful, low T's can still be had without it though, but you will gain about 5-2 finish T (depending on your setup and starting T).

PRETREAT QUESTIONS

This doesn't make sense, I use NaOH and if I don't drop the glyc while still warm it will set solid under my oil,but it still always seperates, and I am using a poly cone tank for this just like you-why a sample in a glass jar should then behave properly, just does not add up. The only thing different is I have not used oil with such a high titration value as this, but I can't see that causing this problem. To combat our cooler...

Wishing everybody has a nice Thanksgiving, even those who don't even celebrate it. To Fabricator and Jon: Thanks for all your help. My pump is a Grundfos recirculating pump with 'flanges' and apparently those were leaking under vacuum. Never occurred to me that could be the case. Put some ATV silicon sealant around the edges of the flange, applied vacuum and viola! Sealed right up and the pump now pumps at -25 hg. (I am sure...

AFAIK the wood chips are primarily for filtering out soaps. That's what I use them for. I doubt that they will lower the cloud point of BD or do much anything other than filtering. I think the cloud point is mostly attributable to the type oil converted and how converted the oil is.

Follow the link, and near the bottom there is a lengthy write up on biodiesel (clik through) and it's safety concerns; all stuff we have been harping on here for some time now. It's a worthy article that should be read by all IMO. ** 7 engines on B100 **My reactor/processor :

Heat and airflow, baby! As much heat as your system can handle or you can generate and as much airflow as is reasonable. I like the stock tank immersion heaters: they have a guard to keep them a safe distance from plastic to prevent melting, and they have an over-temperature kill, but that's it; so they are simple and cheap. I evaporate methanol from my bio to "wash" it, but the concept is the...

Friends -I have been using acid esterfication for several years now, as Dave stated I have a steady supply of BAD oil T 8 - 10, and had to learn how to make the best of it. Base/base, plus reprocess plus reprocess and so on just wasn't doing it for me. I read here about the fatta method back in 2005, using 1 - 2 ml of acid per ltr of oil, and although this method works , the results weren't ...

There are many different options for this. They are used for underground and remote fuel oil tanks. Google "remote oil tank gauge" and you will come up with many affordable solutions that you can likely pick up at your local heating oil supplier or furnace service company... Good luck! Jon

I would imagine it would blend fairly well, what kind of truck do you drive? Newer models can be trempermental. I would throw that blend in my truck, but its an old cummins and will burn about anything except water.

Not enough information to make a real determination. Sounds like too much caustic. Did you check conversion prior to washing? Was the oil dry prior to conversion? Too many questions. Please post your process.

After pre treat, the glyc is not pure,it is dirtier-it has taken on all the crud and most of the water from the feed stock-in return it has really cleaned up and given up some meth to the feedstock and lowered the tit value. The glyc settles out in an hour or two(I leave overnight to make sure). I do not do 5% water prewash in processing(want to keep extra water away from the glyc, but others say it...

Take a look at Biotom's and Jon Heron's posts about using electrical resistance to determine the end point between glyc(conducts) and oil(insulator)-not tried it myself but looks promising. Good Luck
