Great idea. I'll dig out my family tree it has many interesting stories going back to the Colonial times. Some of the Civil War era stuff would put Clint Eastwood movies to shame.

There is no need to heat it, for about $18 you can get the correct carbide drill and tap. Run the carbide drill about as fast as the m ill will run. Also, if you do it yourself, put the tap in the chuck, and start it that way. When tapping with a carbide tap, it is VERY important to get it dead straight. But, as was said, once you get past that case hardenning, the action is really soft, so a regular tap might do just as well...........jackie

After you have learned how to shoot a duce your ready for the 6 or larger. You have past the learning curve with out getting the Shikz beat out of you. Now if you have built on a good platform you can either open up the bolt face or change bolts and barrels If you buy a bolt for the action you have a duel purpose bench rig. You can always switch back to the duce to teach a new shooter. You can always switch back just to kick some tail at a...

I really like reading these things that come directly from regular people instead of history books. I think we get a much better picture of what life was like that way. We don't have any filters between us and the actual information. I'm lucky in that I have people in my family that have done lots of research into this kind of thing. I have lots of old photos and things like that too. I'll be glad to post as much of it as people...

The best wood is English by far and away, it wins in every category that needs to win in. I would not consider any other category of species of walnut. For a one peice stock for a modern rifle it is your best bet.

Ms J and I arrived in San Antonio yesterday about noon and hastened over to Harmons BBQ in Cibolo for lunch, on the advice of a close friend. It was without a doubt, the best BBQ I have had to date! I told a guy working there that we had come all the way from Portland, Maine just to have lunch there. He was a bit astonished but very pleased that we had come and were pleased with the food. We ended up in Rockport at about 6:00 and are going to...

Second question--The goal is to bed it so there in no movement of the action within the bedding upon firing. Tight action screws often don't clamp things together well enough to prevent the forces generated by recoil from moving things around if the recoil lug is improperly bedded. Any movement risks re-settling in a different place. Even extremely small changes from shot to shot are ...

The barrel is round. The octagon, or as they referred it to me, polygonal, is the rifling. It's different but maybe not a totally new concept. You really have to look at to undertand it.

GM Top engine cleaner.... old stuff works best. But if you have some penatrating oil around that won't discolor the metal....you can soak it and it should come out.

Derek, check out varmintal.com and the analysis. on . 22 rifles it is nothing short of amazing the amount of material for a shooter to absorb.

What a terrible way to go to be eaten alive.
There is no doubt that the Montana Fish and Game has ruined the hunting in Montana by reintroducing the wolf to Montana.

The .222 is still a great round. But I equate it to an old computer. The old computer did what it did really well, it was probably the best game in town when you bought it. Now there are simply better computers, faster, more versatile, quite simply more time and thought have gone into them.
Same thing with the .222 It does what it was intended to when it was the only game in town (or simply ...

The guild stockmakers that I know and use have no trouble using stain. I keep some alkanite[spelling] red stain around for that purpose. It is getting very hard to get. The english walnut on my stock on the Blacksmith thread just below needed no stain. All english is not light. Also pictured here is a walnut blank with just finish and no stain needed. It is English.

Tim, I have had several of each and cant really tell a diff in accuracy. The deuce has a better reputation but I have owned a 223 that shot as well as any rifle I have had. Lapua is making 222 brass again. I bought some a few months ago but took off my .222 barrel and havent got to play with it much.

A lot of rifles with aftermarket stainless steel barrels have this god aweful shiny finish. Now I like a shiny finish on blued chrome moly barrels so it may seem strange that shiny stainless ones annoy me. Is there a chemical avaliable that will dull them down, or is it a difficult job to give them a brushed chrome finish like some shotgun recievers? Maybe I should just go out and buy a Ruger as ...

Yes JD it has been noticed.
In fact last year at the IBS annual meeting in Harrisburg, PA. When score and Group reports were given, it was mentioned that score shooting matches have gone up and attendance has gone up on a whole, but that could be the same shooters or a few less shooters being able to get counted in more aggs, because the average amount of shooters per match has gone down. ...

The idea pops up every so often, and never really catches on. The last mass production rifles with gain twist that I can think of off hand were the Italian 6.5 Carcano rifles.
In black Powder days gain twist may have served a purpose, but I can't see any real advantages when modern high velocity bullets are used.
Metal jacketed bullets with long bearing surfaces don't react quite so well ...
