Thanks, Steve , for joining in. Am getting there with my preliminary sketch. Just have to make sure the twisted illusion comes across. Thanks Linda . Very cool ideas. Hadn't thought about what to put in the doorway. Clouds might be a good idea I guess. Might give a surreal feel to it ? Good catch on the bottom stair. I think if I do like below, it might resolve it. Will have to try and see. comp_19_4.JPG Pt 8. Rejected Just kidding. I...

It's so exciting to see this progress Laurie! There's more and more depth to the drawing, and I love, love, love the colour!! About these straight head on portraits that you and Michelle are working on, I think you've both put that discussion to rest. They're difficult, yes, but you're both doing fantastic jobs with these poses. And that tiny little tilt you have going on Kody's portrait makes him seem so...

looking better and better! I like this format better couple of things... 1.the bottom step 'jar's with me, but not sure how to resolve it. Suggestions anyone? 2. the falling flowers... maybe they could 'fall into' another book cover? Perhaps 'botanicl illustration course from the Eden project' - google it.. 3. I keep a skull handy - 4. Lower shelf, right side - how about shells here? on anotherbook cover but...

Happy Thanksgiving Laurie!! Quote: I was so hoping to not do a straight on head on shot as it can seem so static. Obviously I never looked at straight on shots like that I'll have 4 of them floating around soon.... I think he's coming along great....I really like the fur on his neck. Perhaps you could, after getting his face finished, just fade the rest of him out? Just thought that would be a time saver and probably wouldn't...

Thank you for looking in Jason . I agree with what you have said about using the paint a little thicker (I am using acrylics and not oils, although I am sure the same principal works) I suspect that I am a little afraid of laying on thick layers...having worked in a medium which is difficult to correct once its gone wrong i.e. coloured pencils, I am afraid to commit paint to canvas although I tell myself that it can be corrected I don't...

And back to you "Happy Thanksgiving" Actually, I was thinking of the static as just from my perspective of doing the drawing... not the final outcome. So often that is what is most meaningful to the owner I think. And I wouldn't even worry about what you have going. They are great and combining them adds so much more interest. That is a good idea. I think I'll give it try this weekend and see what happens. I'll...

Scott - Thanks for following along! You are one of the artists who inspired me to 'push' the hair further this time, THANKS! Steve - Thanks for the wowier! Rich - Thank you for checking this out. For the tools: I use Bristol Smooth 300 series paper. I like that it's affordable and easy to find. For the skin I use 4H and 2H wooden pencils, approx 4-6 layers, blending with kleenex. Then I switch to mechanical pencils 2H, F and a...

What an awesome concept, mtracy! And beautiful drawing, too. That's a difficult subject, because if you had drawn it badly, it would have been unrecognizable. you did an amazing job on it though. Great textures, and it has a very life-like feel to it. Good on ya!

what a nice and complicated composition.
At least you do not have fruits or flowers or similar so that you can spend
as long as you want on this lovely painting )
Your painting is very delicate, very good job, I will keep on
watching you.

That's a good idea JD (not that it's up to me, though ).
I uploaded my photo to imageshack. I figured it wouldn't take up space here
and it's free!
I searched and searched, but I just don't have any good high resolution
photos that also have an interesting pose. If I have a good high resolution
photo, I look like crap...If I have an interesting pose where I don't look
like crap, the resolution ...

Forgot the techy stuff...so it is 8"X 10" on Ampersand board, done with Derwent, Conte, & Carbothello pencils, Rembrandt, Nupastel, and Sennelier stick pastels. Time about 20 hours give or take.

Klecks i have a question, more than a critique. I have used velour paper before also but have never used fixative on it. Doe it do alright with fixative? I was always afraid it might make the "nap" go funny and not look right.
I love the compositon, and the shine on the glass is just yummy...before I "zoomed" in, I thought the rose was one with a gilt edge, on porcelain. You've done a ...

The book looks interesting and your works always have lots of creativity and thought. Your drawing idea sounds really great and I sure you will make it work. But as for those people who look for reverse satanic messages--they have too much time on their hands. The creation of an intricate song like Stairway to Heaven would have been difficult enough without trying to incorporate a hidden ...

No. Not surprised with that pose at all Nice ref. Would've been a great composition if there was whole of her arms showing, or , at least would've been cool if you could have had her hands showing fully and not clipped. Square pupils are cool though
Good luck!

Hey All…finally doing something
Original and cropped and resize to golden…allot of chicken scratching on tracing paper then transfer to Strathmore velvet gray.
Also trying to see if I can draw a little smaller so I try some figure studys…well draw smaller or get bigger paper…probably both.
I usually use an Staedtler Lumograph 8b for all my graphite but I bought some heavy lead ...

It's always a heartbreaker when we love them and then have to lose them. A portrait like this will be a great way to honor the bond he had with your daughter. He really was an unusually handsome dog with a strong noble head!
Sorry I can't help much with the graphitints. What I do know, is that the colour is much more intense when wet, so I would definitely work dry if you only want the ...

Looks good so far. I believe your barn owls over there are quite a bit
darker in colouring than ours. We have one local that I see often when
walking the dogs...such a magical sight watching them in the wild....and
they come pretty close too....very close in fact. They can be really nosey.
