X2 the 710 I bought was a turd and all Remington did was polish that turd into a 770 but guess what.... Its still a turd! I think you have got some great advice here and the next new gun I buy will be a savage for what its worth.

It's been done automatically for so long that hardly anybody has any experience with not doing it. Leaving the boy "au naturel" will incur some extra maintenance over the years and be more work for you and the missus in the short run. Other than that, I can think of nothing wrong with leaving it like it is.

Hay thats a great story. Congrats on the first deer. Sounds like you need to get your wife in on the action to increase your odds of thekids gettin one. I know I've taken my kids since they were small and that is a great joy just to sit out there with them and have a good time. Sounds like your doing a good job.
