Is there any way to sync an itunes library with a phone? Would it have to be in mp3 format?

I've noticed two problems since "upgrading" to iTunes 7.7: 1. All songs with in WAV format get skipped over and iTunes gives me an error message ("the disk could not be read from or written to") when I try to convert them to MP3 format. iTunes 7.6 played these WAV files without fail—what's up? While searching a number (2007) in spotlight, it found 100's of broken aliases to various jpgs, pdfs, etc. files. Of course, some active files also show up. Hey, I have noticed that video content which I purchase off of the iTunes store (featured films) are downloaded in a resolution higher than that of the standard 640x480 resolution required for iPod compatibility. I want to have the full resolution of my home movies when I put them on iTunes for my Apple TV, but I don't want to have to make a second iPod compatible version as well....

I see a lot of people having the same issues I'm having--Apple Mobile Device, iTunes Helper, iPod Service, all those programs slow my computer way down. Is there a way to set them so they only turn on when I connect my iPod, and/or shut them off when I don't have my iPod connected? I know I can disable them through the Services panel, but it'd be nice if there were an easier way....
