Even an alien-hybrid ain't got *that* long a reach! :D I'm surprised M&M hasn't been going on more about the floaty mountains in Avatar. (Is there an explanation in the book? Unobtainium is a superconductor and the mountains are full of it according to my movie pamphlet, so the levitation is created by the giant electromagnetic "flux vortices"? Like a super-sized version of the display base the corporate...

Norfolk State University is a bit of a mystery. Although it calls itself "State", it has apparently been its own entity (not connected to Virginia) since 1969. So it's probably no surpise that it is doing cutting-edge research on "lasers", sponsored by NASA, NSF and DOD. I couldn't find one page that totally lists their laser studies. But snippets from faculty pages are intriguing. Ring lasers?...

There's a special playing on HBO that shows performance-capture footage of the living actors. Their work is riveting, rivaling the final CG characters. I wouldn't mind seeing the whole film that way as an extra on the DVD.

"The Stars My Destination" by Alfred Bester - I remember reading that.. So I went and dug out some of my old books that I bought from the Science Fiction Book Club.. found some more oldies that I've enjoyed over the years.. "The Computer Connection" also by Bester "Total Eclipse" by John Brunner "There will be time" by Poul Anderson "More than...

Alice starring Caterina Scorsese in the title role (with brown hair, not blond hair) (the real-life Alice Liddell had brown hair too) originally aired on Syfy on December 6 (St. Nicholas's Day), 2009 was rerun last weekend after the rerun of Tin Man I assume probably will be rerun again at some future date (Syfy is usually pretty proud of its various miniseries and tends to keep airing them again) Lots of things very different from Lewis...

I third Connie Willis. Ender's Game has very little military jargon, basically none, and galactic politics is not really the point. Nor is it the type of politics I believe you are thinking of. If you're into graphic novels, I'll assume you've read Neil gaiman, and reccomend that you try his novels and short story collections. Any of them. Also, Alan Moore has a novel, though I've never read it.

James Cameron's AVATAR

Thanks. I actually just checked out the book's Amazon page, and used the look inside feature. Looks petty interesting, actually. When at the beginning of the movie they said the flight had been almsot six years, I knew they were at Alpha Centauri. I will say, despite how I may feel about the story, the science and technology displayed in the movie was more or less believable. It didn't suffer from an injection of the supernatural...

If mag-lev is "anti-gravity", then so are hot-air balloons and airplanes. And so is the chair you're sitting on. Antigravity is NOT anything that opposes the effects of gravity. Mag-lev (LEVitation) opposes the effects of gravity, not gravity itself. Words have meaning. Why do you, a writer, insist on doing such violence to them? :(

Having just seen Avatar in 3D I can categorically say that once you adjust to the 3D, it is a spectacular epic with a near constantly flowing plot and a decent story. The design of the creatures of Pandora and the human technology are all incredibly realised. The only drawback is that there is rarely long enough to stop and 'see' the evocative landscapes and fully enjoy the 'sense of ...

Hi. My name is Robert Clark. The title of the book is ASKARJAN. It is carried by amazon and by barnes&noble on line. After teaching Biology for 36 years I decided I wanted to write novels when I grew up. My background in the sciences helps me keep things a little more realistic than in many science fictions, although naturally some suspension of disbelief is called for. Considerable ...

>>basically anything typical or cliche in the genre<< Wow. I'd like that, too. I've reached the point where I'm so jaded that I'm jaded about my jadedness. Sorry for that. I really don't know what to say. It's a lot easier to spark off from something positive (at least for me.) So right now I"m not thinking of a herd of elephants, and that takes a great deal of not thinking. Anything ...

It's impossible to pick one favorite book ever (and since you started this conversation, what's yours???). And not all of my very favorites are sci-fi. Here's a short list, not in any particular order. Catch-22 - Joseph Heller Dune - Frank Herbert (plus Frank's sequels, but nothing by his son, Brian) Anything by Daniel Keys Moran (Tales of the Continuing Time series, and The Ring) Lord ...

Honestly, it it counts, Neal Stephenson's the Diamond Age would make a great movie, if taken on in the right way. And, though it would never be anywhere nearly good or as thoughtful as the book, Anathem would be awesome too.

@K. Rowley: Part of your list makes me cheer, and part of it makes me flinch. John Christopher I adore. His were some of the first, best Science Fiction novels I ever read. I've never read the Wylie/Balmer books, so I have no opinion. But Norman makes me cringe. He was writing BDSM porn with SF/Fantasy trappings. The D/s lifestyle doesn't offend or repulse me, but I hated the way that ...
