Well for one thing, he's just another faceless wannabe trying to assert an edge. Didn't hear about the remarks and don't know what they were about (probably about him being gay, sigh...) but I'm sure he'll find out a way to portray himself as a victim and use it to propel himself to the top of the charts, so don't count him out just yet.

I think most of these can be called rock, I don't pay much attention to genres. I didn't include any hip hop since that would probably not be considered rock. 2000 Boredoms - Vision Creation Newsun Clinic - Internal Wrangler godspeed you black emperor! - Lift Your Skinny Fists like Antennas to Heaven Modest Mouse - The Moon & Antarctica Radiohead - Kid A Yo La Tengo - And Then Nothing ...

Most bands and songwriters seem to peak in their 20's or 30's. That's when their ideas are fresh, new and most inspired. There are always exceptions to the rule but for the majority of artists it seems they tend to run out of ideas after this, often all too brief period, and begin repeating themselves. Of course the best artists continue to have that flash of brilliance every now and ...

That's been said about everyone from The Beatles, Stones, Who to Bruce Springsteen. I wouldn't say they are overrated--perhaps overpraised and overexposed. The result seems to be that people sour on their music just as they did other groups from other generations. Are they the best band in rock'n'roll?--it all depends on you and your taste. Never much of a Sonic Youth fan, I still give big thumbs up to Thurston for his work with Nels Cline. Though I probably wouldn't tell someone they're "rock albums", he and Nels are incredibe together on Live at Easthapton Town Hall (w/ Zeena Parkins on electric harp) and In-Store. Those 2 are my favorite playing I've ever heard from Thurston.
