The adoption process of a lot of shelters and rescues is actually a topic of discussion on another forum. While the intentions are good, there has been a downside, so if I may play devil's advocate. Some shelters and rescues take their rules so seriously that dogs aren't getting into homes. Each situation is unique...someone with no breed experience, for example. We have to get the experience somewhere, sometime. Perhaps someone w/o...

Linda I'd pay for her trip if I thought she'd go... they have a 2nd house in AZ I think so they go the other direction unfortunately. We should have let the blonde behind us take care of her last year !! LOL I'm waiting for ark ark to get loose like he always does and go tearing across the back of my yard and through the fence into the other yard and become a snack for Carly and Rex... I'd feel kinda bad for Ark ark.....

Where do you get your so-called "facts"? http://most-popular.net/dog-breed "Most Popular Dog Breed The most popular dog breed by registered ownership in both the United States and the United Kingdom is the Labrador Retriever, thought of as a friendly and intelligent companion. I don't think that we can legislate responsibility. In a similar vein, parents should be required to take classes and pass a test before being allowed to have a child. In NH, our state has provided subsidized funding for shelters to spay/neuter animals before placement and give people discounts onn licensing if their animal is neutered.

Insurance??? really??? I have owned dogs my entire life, GSD's for over 25 years and have worked with GSD rescue for many many years. I have taken in these unwanted abused animals, rehabilitated them and adopted them out WITH a contract stating they are responsible financialy and will not give away the animal or neglect them.......however, good luck enforcing it. I will be the first one in line griping about how many people will not care...

OTP... Ron C Weber, I've never met a Scottie in real life but I've always been drawn to the breed. The TV announcer for the 2007 (not last year) Westminster Show said that the breed is challenging because they are convinced that they are the most superior life form on earth. He said that an owner would have to take one as a very small puppy so as to work with the dog and, hopefully, convince him that he can deserve some respect! I...

Zelda, one of my former horrible neighbors had a toto dog and a collie mix that ran unrestrained through the neighborhood, destroying and antagonizing. Of course, MY dogs were at fault for barking at these annoying creatures. After many complaints, as I tried to protect my own dogs, the woman said she was getting kennels from her brother. The dogs would stay in the kennels when nobody was home. Well, as it turned out, another neighbor found...

Who are these people owning these dogs, and what is wrong with them? I sincerely hope you report them to authorities. I have owned German Sheperds, and even though they were sweet as can be, I never just let them run loose. First off, they can be hit by a car, second off, what if someone provoked them? And if my GSD was standing in front of someone with their teeth bared (which would never happen since I socialize my dogs well, and if they...

Jennifer, your post helped me a lot. We got a new Staffie since our boys died and our vet has stressed to us to take her to socialization classes. Plus, we are going to introduce another Staffie/Pit into our family shortly. We had so much to give to our boys that we want to "pay it forward". We do that to honor our boys. Thank you for the well thought out post. Don't let people like Barbara get to you. It is not worth...

My Rottweiler Sydney {R.I.P.} used to lay on the floor, with her back to the television, and watch the security camera monitor that was pointed to my front yard and street. She would growl very quietly when people passed by or kids on bikes were outside. She would watch it for hours at a time. It really suited her temperament. She was a great security guard! A cozy inside job, with her family, and close to the food!

Getting into the garbage is one of those "self rewarding" behaviors that is almost imposible to break once they start. You really only have two options...........move the garbage can or crate the dogs. Crating a dog is an act of love, not cruelty..........all my dogs loved their crates. Since you have stated you wont crate.......your only other option is to put up the garbage or get rid of ...

Actually, there are several fruits and vegetables that our dogs like to eat. Suprises the heck out of us what they will eat sometimes. But, yes, their favorite is definately meat. We use Nutro, have since our older dog was a pup. And often supplement with meat or sometimes other food items.

I my first response is fear because I have read so many stories of children being attacked. However, my sister has two pitbulls that are very affectionate and well behaved. I wrestle with both of her dogs and never worry in the slightest. I think it's a shame that bad owners have given a wonderful breed a bad reputation.

I've had this problem with my dogs before, it's kind of sad. She should get over it soon, just try not to inadvertently let her play with random lighted objects. You can try using a treat to redirect her focus too.

Hi Chris, I don't disagree with you in the least, but what you are suggesting is legislating personal responsibility and making citizens accountable for neglectful behavior - making it law for them to be ethical and financially responsible. I'm all for it, but do you actually live in the United States? You can barely get the citizens of this country these days to properly care for their ...

Sounds like you need to go to obedience class; you and the dog, to learn how to correct this behavior. There is no leash substitute for training and it is the difference between appropriate and inappropriate behavior. You, as the dog leader, needs to provide the correction such the your dog learns that this behavior is not accepted. There are also ways to slow down eating, but it ...

I was properly aghast about the evident dearth of leash laws in the city where you are walking. Of course, what you need to do if the dog is approaching you is stand absolutely still making no eye contact and not talking to him until the dog tires of barking and leaves you alone. If the dog is simply showing noise and behavior without approaching you, again making no eye contact and ...

This happened to me with my old dog who happened to be named Shaman. He was a very small percentage of wolf, like an eighth, and the rest was german shepard and yellow lab. Shaman was a crazy but good dog, he loved to swim chasing sticks at the resevoir, he knew how to climb a few specific trees, he would dig ground squirrals out of the ground and carry them around then eat them, eww, I ...

Yes, all puppies will do this, given the opportunity. They learn about their world by putting things in their mouth, just as human babies do. Until she passes this phase you must supervise her closely and constantly to prevent her eating something that could poison her or cause a digestive obstruction (as can many common things around the house and yard). Teaching her a "drop it" or "...
