Hi and welcome.? Do you have a good friend that might go with you the first time?? I went by myself the first time and it was not what I thought it would be.....I understand the fear/nervousness that comes with that first move toward help.? Remember, we ALL have to walk into that FIRST meeting.? Let us know how it goes.? God bless....

Yesterday I ran into a grocery store for a moment and bought a last minute item. There was a lady collecting for the Salvation Army. Immediately I heard my mom's voice, "Never pass a red kettle without putting something in." And I know that, despite this recession, I have fewer monetary worries than Mom and Dad did raising us.

Hi...friend... Try to look at it this way...I dont know about you...but I could do anything when I was drinking.? I bet if you were drunk you could walk in a meeting?? I bet when you were drunk you could sit in a bar alone? Go to a liquor store alone?? Those place are MUCH more scary than an AA meeting. The people in AA are there to get better.? The people in AA will welcome you.? You have nothing to be afraid of...I know its different...but...

...I am grateful that I woke up sober this morning...I don't have to worry about how much wine I have...will it last me through the day and evening...until the liquor stores open tomorrow...I won't have any moments from today that I won't remember...I won't wake up at 0200 wondering where the boys are, what time did they go to bed...is my husband mad at me?...I am thankful that I am in such a happy place...I hope that you...

Dear Beth, I'm sorry that I haven't come back to post to this message board for a week!? It has been a harrowing, but exhilirating week.? I quit drinking because I needed to quit.? I quit for me.? I quit because drinking has nothing that I want.? I know I am an alcoholic, but I needed to say it out loud and to others in order for it to sink in.? I am almost one week sober and the sky is a little bluer, the birds are singing more...

I got a sort of "get out of jail free" card this year.? Like Monica, I was not one for a "just a glass" at a family get together.? If I could have stuck a straw in a bottle of wine, I would have.? And trust me, there were plenty of family get togethers where I would skip the food and hang out by the bar the whole night!? Start with wine, switch?to vodka, and when that was put away, start in on the "dessert"...

Thanks so much for all your kind words!? I am so much happier sober, I wish I would have been strong enough a few weeks ago to know better!!!!? Thankfully, I was able to recognize right away that drinking was not the answer but the enemy.? I can tell myself over and over not to dwell on the fact that my alcoholic brain won, but it won't do me any good... all I can do is move forward.? Hi boca and welcome to the board. I felt just like you when I first went to AA. I was so desperate to stop drinking that I did not even hear the word God the first six months. I know they said it, but I had selective hearing...and I am grateful for that! One of the things I learned after I had a bit of sobriety under my belt was that AA is not a religious based program...it is spiritual. ...

Leslie,
Thanks. Having the week off for Fall Break I find myself watching more TV than usual and boy, do the senses get bombarded with what the holidays are suppossed to be like according to the media. Hi Emily, My name is Brenda and 12 1/2 years ago I was you. I was looking in the mirror and knowing that alcohol was my master and I needed to change. I did not know how. I did wind up (I say that because I did not intend to go to AA) in an AA meeting that night...scared, silent, crying, and knowing that nobody could ever help me. I did not hear a lot. What I did hear was that I was not ...

Hello Heidi
Please know I have you in my thoughts and prayers. I have not been where you are, but have wanted to drink so badly I was in tears. You can stay sober tonight, you can, you can, you can. I once shredded page by page a phone book until I fell asleep (by the way...shredded by hand)
Please keep in touch.

...I'm a lucky ducky as my I am the only drunk in my family...and, extended family...alcohol has NEVER been a daily part of my family life or celebrations until I added it in...we do have a few friends who have parties but I did not drink outside of the home (how silly is that...during my 18 months of serious imbibing...if I couldn't drink the bottle, I wasn't interested in the glass and I knew...

Hi,
For me, I tried for years to drink in a controlled manner and while I did at times have some temporary success, it always ended up out of control. I have found the only way to stay sane is to stay completely sober. The mental freedom and peace I now have is wonderful. Keep us posted. Personally, I would get the alcohol out of the house.

I have a couple of suggestions.... First, I would try and find a counselor to talk to about these issues with your mother. As long as they are unresolved, she will be a constant source of irritation and anger. I also know that AA may have been suggested to you before - why not try it now? What do you have to lose? I could not deal with my family issues and triggers until I had a little bit...

Betty, thank you for all that you have done and the hope and support you have provided to the members here.
You, and your family, will be in my thoughts. I wish you all the best in life and hope that we'll still see you here often as a regular board member, if not a CL.
(((hug)))
