This particular car still has the 4 speed auto, which was a whole lot more reliable than the 5 speed used in the 2000 to 2003 models. Do they still go bad? Yes. Do some reading here on the forum about the drain and fill frequency and how to go about it.

I am sure the best way to prevent/solve this problem is to change the fluid regularly. I think the procedure is in the service manual. However, when I was having this problem, it cleared up almost entirely after a few ABS inducing panic stops. Evidently the system may never have been activated, since I bought the car from the proverbial "little old lady". Cycling the ABS a few times loosened ...
