personally, what I don't like are stories where the person I thought was the good guy becomes the bad guy. I don't like investing emotionally into a character like that and having him turn on me.
When I say clearly defined good and evil, I merely mean that I know the good guy will be the good guy in the end. Now he can have a best buddy who betrays him, or who turns out to be the baddie, or ...

A: It's a function of Homeland Security. New government regulations allow for domestic spying without a warrant - but what you don't know is that the NSA started doing this generations ago, very quiely, by genetically altering the simple Russet potato. Now, as that bag of potential tots sits in your kitchen, photos are taken at a ratio of 10/minute and transmitted back to Homeland Security. ...

Thing is - if it's your world, it's your rules. If there is a reason for this equality ( even if it's never stated in the book) it shouldn't be a problem
If someone says 'Oh, well it wasn't like that in mediaeval Europe', imo your ultimate comeback is 'It isn't IN mediaeval Europe'
It should whoever be both consistent and believable in the context of your world.

Howdy! Any upstairs rooms free? I need a bath and some company of the female persuasion, not necessarily in that order!
Or just... the first 500 words of any of the Western stories that have been galloping through my head for too long.

I have heard quite a bit about NaNo Word Wars on AW. How does this work?
Australian NaNo's already started, it will start soon in Asia, and we will be starting ours in about 6 hours, so time to find out more about the Word Wars.
Ohhh...6 hours to go, can't wait.

I'm going to hate myself in the morning, but I've been working on my novelette that (in part, thanks to Aggy) required some rewrite. I changed the " public service announcement" just for you Aggy.
It's going to have to wait until tomorrow for finishing and posting. Too stupid tired tonight.

I ran across this "exam" for fantasy writers. It's somewhat amusing. I've seen others for science fiction that are even funnier.
