That's a tough choice. Super Metroid and A Link to the Past are some of the best games you can get on VC. As for Wiiware, I'd recommend Mega Man 9, followed by World of Goo.

I can't comment on the wiiware games but as far as the retro ones go you should get Link to the Past. Its simple, fun and has phenomenal replay value.

I just got a Wii this week. The first three VC items I got were SMRPG, Zelda ALTTP and Super Metroid - in that order. Hella great titles.

Excellent question: I had to replace the game pads regularly for Super Mario, Mario Kart and TMNT: Turtles in Time. Oh, and of course Zelda: Link to the past. I used to sleep with the cartridge under my pillow.
