My stepson used to fly back and forth from London alone since he was 5. Neither Virgin Air or British Airways charged a few. However, different airlines have different rules. US Air considers minors from 5-15 will require assistance and charge for it.

Budget airlines such as Jet2 or whatever don't allow unaccompanied minors under the age of 14, but most real airlines do have a policy. It is possible, and as a veteran of long haul solo flights as a child, I don't think they cause any harm!
