Very nice scene Blake. I just don't like the sound of those long and deep continous cuts. A carver's nightmare. Nice job, Tom

Thanks everyone! You all are too kind! I do see a few things on this carving that I will do differently next time, but this was a fun project. It makes me want to work more on caricature carving now that Christmas is over. Of course I still love carving those santas! Thanks again! Blake

My brother asked me a few weeks ago if I could carve a Retirement gift for a gentleman that he works with by the name of Yogi. Appearantly Yogi would rather fish than breathe. Usually my brother knows when Yogi has a good day fishing because he brings him a big mess of Trout to enjoy. Yesterday afternoon I took this carving to my brother to give to Yogi. I've never met the man, but I've heard...

I assume you want some type of caricature as you posted it here (caricature forum) .. Maybe a teacher with a book of the subject that she teaches. You could even do a likeness.
Is there an occasion for giving the carving? If Valentines day, carve a likeness of yoru son with a rose....

Randall... I would venture to say that whether you use a vise or not depends on the size of your work, the size of your tools and the way you use them. I hardly ever carve anything larger than 6" high and hold everything in my hands but then I only use knives and palm tools. If you use larger gouges and V-tools, two handed or with mallets then you're obviously going to need a third ...

Nice group of carvings Don. I used to carve some similar to the Santa (farthest left one on the group picture) out of red tees. Less painting that way! You've gone a few steps farther and have a nice collection...can't say that all are pretty, but I believe that was the intention. Exellent work.

That's great, Curt! Nice job. And the thinner legs end up emphasizing her backside, to good effect. Really a nice carving.
