DAWGS OFFLINE - OCTOBER 2008 - TexasZin's house in Garland, TX (10/11/2008) The DAWGS gathered at TexasZin's house in Garland, TX for our monthly offline in October. Theme for the dinner was "Good Pinot Noir". On to the show... A couple of palate primers to get the evening started... N.V. Segura Viudas Cava Aria Brut - Spain, Catalunya, Cava WIML86? Tasted October 11, 2008 at an ...

3:15pm, removed capsule to find crusty/moldy growth. extracted mushy cork in two whole parts. poured thru unbleached paper coffee filter into a riedel funnel into a reidel decanter. noticed a slight brown coloring but still retaining a firm brick red at it's core. immediately poured about 1 ounce in glass to test. decanting took 15 minutes, didn't expect it to take so long, eventually gave up on ...

Tasted 4/28/07. Sweet rich blueberry & cherry on nose. Well-integrated oak, but it's a bit too hot, needs more roundness & presence. on midpalate. Disappointing considering it sells for $30+. 87 pts.

2001 Pine Ridge Andrus Reserve - USA, California, Napa Valley (10/11/2008) Rich, lush cherry and fresh brewed coffee with wonderful earthy undertones. Creamy, mouth coating heft that makes one think of drinking hot chocolate. Nice oak structure. My first experience with this wine, I'd say it is just entering its prime drinking window but will continue improving and stay there for years to...

Fill into neck; perfect capsule and cork. Tasted without decanting. Vibrant, deep crimson-ruby red. Very attractive, evolved bouquet of dried cherries, grilled meat, earth, mint and other herbs. On the palate, notes of underbrush and forest floor, with less fruit than I was hoping for. Astringent, chalky, faintly bitter tannins that got worse after 30 minutes. It appears the tannins have ...

One of the better drinking '98 Burgundian wines I have had. On the seductive nose, no question you are smelling a red burg, with the just right amount of earthiness. The flavor profile changed over time. I loved the strawberry, plum, and currant playing against both smoke and chalk overtones, and a lively finish. A well crafted wine!

Tonight I tasted the 2006 Clos de los Siete for the first time side by side with another first time wine, namely the 2005 Clos Jordanne Village Reserve and I must say in the end it was not even "clos". The Los Siete was a bit simple and plummy with some dark fruit, but it was a bit hollow and fairly acidic. Don't get me wrong, it was a decent wine... good with roast chicken and an ok quaff but ...

2001 Spring Mountain Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District (10/11/2008) Very lush and fruit driven for an 01 and a mountain wine. Big, upfront currant and plum with some oak and heat on the long finish. Not as elegant as expected, but a nice rich Napa cab with mostly resolved tannins at this stage. (91 pts.)

This was a recent import from Italy. It had about 4 days of rest in the cellar before I opened one, and I'm guessing that may not have been quite enough time to settle down. Showing very young for 61 years of age. Ruby in color with slight ambering throughout. No signs of seepage. Lovely notes of rose petal, copper penny, orange peel, tobacco, cassis, smoke and light soy. Great glycerin ...

What a great night. Thanks to Orlando for hosting. Great spread of food too! The title says it all. This was a single blind tasting. We all knew what was to be poured but not the order. We tried them one at a time blind, and they were all revealed at the end. Most of the wines were opened 2 hours beforehand but not decanted. A few were decanted 6 hours prior, but I don't remember which ...

What a treat to be able to try this the night after having the '75. This is a very formidable wine. Much more backward and less evolved than the '75. This still needs another 10 years in the cellar to hit peak, although it's definitely approachable now with a couple hours of decanting. Notes of dark briary blackberry, black plum, slightly green coffee bean, mineral, dark tea leaf, charcoal, ...

This wine reminds me very much of the '02 Sloan. That said...it's a love it or hate it style. I can see how fans of the "extracted", Laube and Parker, would fawn over this. And, I could see Neal Martin and Jancis Robinson practically choke on this the minute it hit their old world palates. I can appreciate what this style has to offer, but at this price tag, it's an easy pass for me. Notes...

This is the second time I've had this in one week! A delicious bottle of wine. Well structured, aromatic, and finishing with some of the slightly "ripe" vintage character. This bottle was a little different than the other bottle I had as it did not have any eucalyptus notes the other one did. Light ambering throughout, and showing some signs of age. Notes of cassis, violets, cinnamon stick, white...

I'm surprised not to find a note on this great wine. I like to give Cornas wines 10 years or more. A dark, rich and intensely flavored Syrah. The nose was showing smoke, meatiness, tar and olive which followed on the palate, also offering raspberry, black pepper, and a lot of currant towards the backside. Like most from Cornas, a sturdy wine that will hold for 10 more years with ease. ...

2006 Edmeades Winery Zinfandel Mendocino - USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino (9/30/2008) I would have guessed this was a syrah rather than a zin as it is not as spicy or peppery as most and has more of a plum, cherry and fig aspect rather than blackberries like I get from most zins. I really like it though as it is a little lighter in body than many zins, hides its 15.5% alc very well...

Year to year, one of the most consistently good and better QPR wines out there. Each vintage seems to have a lot of character - it's not the same wine every year, which is refreshing. Price has only gone up about 3 or so dollars over the past several years despite three WS Top 100 appearances. I agreed exactly with the WS ratings for 2001--2004 (actually, they agreed with me as I scored them ...

Tasted blind. A very herbal nose and smelled dry. (?) A ripe attack of cherry, berries and overripe plum. Nice spice throughout, but a little stemmy on the finish. 91 points.
