Transferring PhD programs
Published (2009-11-30 20:40:00)
Just keep in mind that your post-PhD academic career will be whatever you make of it regardless of where you get your PhD from. If you have it in you to do great mathematics research it doesn't matter if you do it at Toronto or MIT. The most important thing is to have an advisor who helps you be the best you can be. Regardless, you're not going to be able to transfer without an enthusiastic blessing from faculty in your current...

Yes, in my field, programs that require the subject test (or list it as optional) also require the general GRE. When you order the scores from ETS, it gives you an option to select to send the general, subject, or both to send to the school(s). [I think- I can't remember the exact wording.]

So, I've been out of the academic loop for a while now while working and getting through the economic slump, but things are looking up, and I think it may be time to think about going back to school for an MS, part time. A little about my background: The Pluses: - BSE in Electrical Engineering from an ivy league university. - Three years of work experience as a programmer at a top flight investment bank. The Minuses: - I have a B+...

Appropriate Subjects
This part of the board rarely gets many replies, but I thought I'd post a question anyway. I am currently thinking that I will stay away from universities for a while after my undergraduate degree is over, and use that time to figure out more clearly what subject area I might want to study further.
I see no point...

It's a fine line. You need to show enough specificity that it's obvious you know what you want to do, but general enough to not limit your research options. It might help if you can connect the two into some kind of theme so that you don't sound immature about your research interests. The most important thing is to be honest and sincere about what you want to do.

Question about SOP for MS Statistics
I'm applying to some master's programs in statistics (some are interdisciplinary math/stats), and I'm wondering if it's okay to mention in the statement of purpose that I want to study math/stats to get a better foundation for econ. Would this call into question my commitment to the program in the ...

I think it's unlikely that you would get funding as a masters student in EE at any of those schools. Personally, I think UTA is the best of the three. UTA takes it's Engineering school very seriously, it's situated in the middle of the huge Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, and has a large international student population (which I'm guessing would be a positive thing in your case).
But for you...

First of all, this varies from field to field, and you didn't specify which field you're interested in. But it's safe to assume that for most graduate programs in the US, you never contact a professor before you are admitted.
The best you can probably do is view the webpages of professors-of-interest as they will sometimes note if they are accepting new students for the next year....
