Perhaps the point of the thread was that there are people and events of great importance and large amounts of data that have been ignored for the specific design of treating history as a story with a series of plots and a story arch. This is done to wrap history into a neat little parcel and say that several events were directly responsible for other events which lead to the formation of the current issues of the day. It is something to...

Did You Know European Tradition...
Published (2009-11-09 20:34:00)
It's not difficult to find Arabic poetry from c. 11th century or even earlier extolling the many virtues of a warrior or a lord... that however leaves open the question of which direction such literature actually travelled. One thing which is certain is that the tradition of chanson de geste definitely rose from the crusades. Quote: European chivalry of medieval times has as many similarities with traditional Roman virtues Now off-hand...

Importance of destroying enemy camp

Makes me think of Mircea the Old's situation earlier at Nicopolis when the crusaders were arguing about who would gain the glory of the first charge and the French, Hungarians and Austrians were all arguing and Mircea was suggesting careful planning and using Romanian light cavalry to scout and ambush. The idiotic crusaders thought it would be dishonorable...and those same crusaders got owned.

While all the other people were without a doubt very tough, I chose the Germans for multiple reasons.
1. Reputation: Allot of the classical authors respected/feared them as did the Romans and Celts in general.
2. Battlefield performance: From the Teutons,Cimbri inflicting 80,000 casualties on the Romans to the Marcomannic wars inflicting 20,000 casualties in one battle. Caesar of all...

Ehh, not really. Some of the elements may have come from the east (From the various parts of the Roman Empire, the Arabs, and the barbarian tribes that came from the east), but "chivalry" is a uniquely Western-European invention. It came out of the warrior traditions of the incoming tribes, the locals traditions, and the influence of Christianity and the idea of fighting a "just war...

Erm, Civic, I'm not sure where you got that map, but it's erroneous. The Germans planned to occupy the northern parts of France and Belgium and create puppet states in Eastern Europe and the Balcans. This was their aim from the start, the Septemberprogramm.

Isn't there some nationalist-Turk myth of them being a Turkic people?

Didn't the Franks at the battle of Tours send a party to the enemy camp to rob it of it's values and plunder, and that was actually quite important in the victory if I remember correctly.

I chose other because the question is subjective. What is the social standing of the person you are asking? Would they have a different standing at the time then they do now? They say you can not choose your parents I believe it is true then as well as now. If you were born an aristocrat or a person who relies on the aristocracy then you will be a Royalist. If you were middle class or ...

The Waffen SS was no different than the Heer. There were formidable units in the SS, just as there were in the Heer. There were also divisions in the SS that were a far cry from the standard image of an "elite" fighting force that the SS seems to be perceived as. Similarly so - both Heer and SS units participated in war crimes.
Your poll is skewed towards to the perception that ...

Archers for sure, such as the English Longbowmen you know how strong they would of had to been to wield those longbows with great accuracy, they trained for life, They could shoot down many French knights at once who were charging them, great offence and even greater defence, againdt the French who prefered man-to-man fighting.

Kind of self evident man. If they had won Stalingrad it would been a huge moral blow, would of allowed them to continue to advance towards oil rich regions, and would have averted the complete destruction of like, what, a million german troops?
If Stalingrad fell, its very likely Russia would have fallen.
