If you can wait, try and save some more cash and consider building a new rig. Or you could get yourself a good AMD CPU, motherboard and DDR3 RAM for $350 and spend on other components later. Reuse the PSU, case, HDD and GPU for now. Tell us what you'd prefer.

Definitely go dual core at a min. Quad doesn't make as big of a difference for most users, but dual is the way to go.

Your manual : http://downloadmirror.intel.com/1520...01_English.pdf From your manual: Installing and Removing Memory CAUTION To be fully compliant with all applicable Intel SDRAM memory specification addendums, the board requires DIMMs that support the Serial Presence Detect (SPD) data structure. I meant no disrespect towards you or anything. But basically all this machine is gonna do is just sit there and not even experience anything close to peaking its performance. So why add or replace what i dont need. And any future systems i will be getting will be portable anyway so basically id have to optimize what id like on a website and order brand new regardless when the time comes. But you gave your input on it and im going to use that...

I hope this doesn't turn into a journal, But,
as I travel through the labyrinth of "not-knowingness", here's what Sony e-support says:
NOTE: The BIOS update can't be loaded using the Linux Operating System. there is no programming or Operating language mutation while changing from NTFS to FAT 32 file systems. No fragments of the Windows Operating System hangs the MBR....

Replace you old processor and see if original setup still works. and check
to see if your processor settings in Bios art auto config or if you need to
adjust FSB, and other Frequencies to match your new processor.

AMD chip motherboards by Gigabyte, MSI, Biostar, EliteGroup, Asus, FoxConn... That were release between 1 year and 6 months ago... and still on the market at Directron, NewEgg, and Frys. For ruggedness, quality build, and reliability related to low cost, we are partial to Gigabyte and Foxconn.

So let my fully understand your issue. Are you having problem with the ram you bought off of your friend or are you having problems when you have all 3 memory sticks installed?
Dual channel requires using matched pairs of memory sticks. Running an odd number of memory sticks will set the memory to run in single channel mode.
Mixing memory isn't recommended unless specs and memory speed is ...

Both GB and ASUS make great motherboards, it's just a matter of picking a
board with features you want. What CPU are you looking to use? Are you
looking to overclock or use a lot of RAM? Will you be using Windows 7? It
will be a bit easier to recommend something if you answer some of those
questions. I'd also like to know your budget and maybe what other hardware
you plan to use or what you ...

Depends on your cash situation. Sounds like your PC is a bit old so a refresh would be in order. Particularly if you have a nice TV, you are probably going to want to use the PC for gaming/media.

You can sent the scanline rendering option in MAX to use 4 cores, in which case the Q6600 would demolish the P4. Actually, it may still beat out the P4 even without selecting that option. Hyprethreading isn't nearly as big a bump in performance as having an additional core.

Hi Zilliak,
for many games you will not notice much of a difference, however as more and more games will take advantage of more than two cores, get the 720 for $18 more.

Make sure you unplug mains lead after you shutdown. Remove the upgrade ram and try starting again. when you say "where the P1 is at" do you mean the power connector to the Mainboard?.
Could be a few things but i suspect you have blown a ram module or the PSU.
