I can never remember what gets issued year to year, so I'll defer on my best of list for now. Yours? Oh, I do like the Avett Brothers new one.

Stereophile Forums: Chess Reissues
Published (2009-12-05 20:15:00)
Has anybody else dipped into the Chess reissues of the last year or two? I never thought the label was well-served by prior reissues, excluding the Chess boxes. But the newer collections - like three volumes of Bo Diddley and the indescribably good Little Walter set (where has this music been all my life?)are first rate. Yes, you have the "two or three takes in a row" thing, which can be a problem. But this music is so good and so...

-God Help The Girl, a side project from Belle & Sebastian front man Stuart Murdoch is very enjoyable. -Them Crooked Vultures is interesting hard rock. The album is a collaboration between Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age, Dave Grohl of Nirvana and Foo Fighters fame, and John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin. -The Beatles mono boxed set probably isn't entirely an answer in the spirit of your question but it's given a couple of...

All of these seem to please kids, indie parents and grey-haired grandparents alike- no mean feat. I really enjoy Aimee Mann's album "One More Drifter in the Snow." Good list of classics and some different picks and she gets just the right old-school feel in there. The Bare Naked Ladies Christmas album is great, and throws in some funny alt holidays in there too. It's an odd blend of almost straight up carols/songs with a...

Not to worry Struts. Folks are paying above retail for the stereo and mono boxed sets on Ebay! Of course they will milk this cash cow for anything and everything they think they can get. But the novelty of this USB release is too much to pass up, and wait till internet buzz starts proclaiming how the SQ blows away the CD's! Good to hear from you. Missed ya round here!

Thanks for the recommendation. I'm listening now, and digging it. There's a musical resemblance to early Wilco and Ryan Adams, I think. And the album cover is very pretty. There have been a lot of beautiful album covers this year -- I like the Grizzly Bear, Zola Jesus, Fiery Furnaces, Bowerbirds, Rain Machine covers a lot -- but I'll have to take a stroll through my stacks at home ...

I'm not sure this quite qualifies, since he was the dominant figure in the band, but Joe Strummer brought the Clash's soul with him when he moved on. A better thought: when the Beatles broke up, no one got the essence. s.

Robert Baird mentioned A Hard Day's Write and several other Beatles-related books in his October issue "Aural Robert."
