And what is the message? That an addict, any addict, can stay clean, lose the desire to use, and recover from active addiction by working the program of NA.

It's kinda like the saying "we keep what we have by giving it away." There is a double-edge. My desire to serve is almost always directly connected to my desire to grow and progress. But my desire to serve is never about status, prestige or monetary compensation.

When I was out there I never wanted to be around a clean person. However if a using person finds it interesting to do so....many get tired of the game and move on or hear something they need to hear. I loved the JFT today. Attracting a using addict is what we are trying to do. Thats hard to do when your clean and talking about God all the time. I hear stories all the time about addicts that came to mgts while using till they finally got clean....

Only an addict would...

The only disagreement I have with anything above is that "only an addict" would do them. Really those are pretty standard human behavior...inferiority complexes and wanting to get somebody to foot the bill. I can understand why some people would have an issue with the use of a podium or raised dias and bring it up at a group conscience session. I think it's worth hashing out, because it can help people work through what...

Any group whose actions affect other groups, or NA as a whole, need to be reminded of their primary purpose at the Area Service meeting. If this group is not carrying a clear message of recovery the NA Way, they are in violation of our most basic Traditions. Our local Area has taken a groups inventory many times on the Area floor when there has been the need to. Some groups have recieved the help graciously and others have closed their doors....

I had a similar surprise, KJ. Amazing, isn't it? No sooner did I let go and accept that Christmas would be what it would be than the one thing I'd forgotten about arrived. Merry Christmas. Peace & Love, Sugah

Another Miracle?
Published (2009-12-18 07:05:00)
I have been struggling with how to get my kids the Christmas gifts they want this year, and had just about ruled out getting them. My son's medical expenses (I had to pay a specialist out of pocket because my insurance was slow to approve some care that he really needed) have been high, and straining my budget to the max. So yesterday, right before Christmas, imagine my shock and surprise to open the mailbox and find a large check from my...

One thing I have learned is that my motives are seldom ever "pure"; there always seems to be a bit of ego-centric motivation in whatever I do. I need to strive for selfless service and check my motives often. Mixed motives can still yield good results.

1. I have no problem with people speaking at a podium. It's been done for years. Big deal. 2. Doesn't sound like a good situation to me. Why can't these people put their time/money into regular, NA-sanctioned events? I don't renegade meetings or fundraisers because there is no accountability/connection to the larger fellowship.

IMO, hearsay (gossip) is never grounds for the dismissal of a member from their service position. I can't help but wonder if the member being accused of using was allowed to take part in the group conscience...if not or if so, I believe there is a concept that addresses situations like this. In fact...I believe concepts 6, 9, and 10 may need to be reviewed in this situation. If we were to ...

It's easy to get complacent when you have some substantial clean time because you forget the pain of active addiction and other behaviors that have caused trouble in the past. To avoid complacency, I must remember that I'll always have that addictive mindset even if I am not using mind/mood altering drugs today. I must continue going to meetings and to work with newcomers, so I can remember ...

Yes, addiction is part of who I am. Take away the drugs, and you have an addict who is not using drugs. Even though I haven't used drugs in a while, I still have the same traits that led me to use drugs addictively.

It's odd how this meditation took a different take on this "the only requirement for membership is a desire to stop using." Usually, this is interpreted is implying that NA does not exclude anyone based on their race, ethnicity, gender, sexual preference, age, income level, recovery history, drug of choice, etc...Anyone can be a member who wants to stop using.
