Im not sure about your specific question, but are you just posting this all over any forum? This is a
New Edge Cougar forum, not a Mazda forum? I would try asking them first...

Never seen or heard of it being done in all my years here. Interesting prospect, though.. keep updating, if you decide to go through with it.

If you take out the rear subframe bolts, and loosen the front ones it will allow it to drop down enough to get to those bolts easier. Make sure the tie
rod ends are tied up in the wheel wells to hold the rack, and be sure the front and rear roll resistors are removed before you unbolt the rack.
That being said, here's a how-to I had typed up for a member awhile ago. Hope this helps....

I was going to say try manually putting it in reverse from the top of the transmission but you already tried that. If that doesn't work than it can be shifter cables adjustment. it's got to be something on or in the transmission. Not really sure what to tell you.

You can find a cd4e (the name of your automatic) rebuilt for as little as $800. I refuse to believe you are getting a used one for cheap enough to justify using a used one... Its a PAIN to swap out this trans. Without "fixing"
the runaway line pressure issue, the new trans is likely going to blow just like your old one.
If you insist on a used trans.... the transmission code that would ...

95% chances are your forward drum blew the end off. Will require a complete rebuild. Check your fluid levels just to be sure but when you
loose forward gears this is usually the cause.
If you are from Michigan I can help... Otherwise you are looking at $2000-$3000 for a rebuild.
