Mac Question
Published (2009-11-07 14:29:00)
Is the backup hard drive you use for Time Machine partitioned with any volumes in FAT32, as opposed to HFS+ ? Mac OS 10.5 used to display my (Ethernet) networked Konika Minolta 5430 DL laser printer in the sidebar, with a "name" that was actually its MAC ID number. Mac OS 10.6 doesn't display it at all. If you're using Mac OS 10.5.8, what you're seeing in the sidebar is probably your networked HP printer....

Removal of emails by ISP's

I struggle to think of a reason anyone would want to use their ISP's email. It generally has less features than a dedicated email provider's service, and you have to go through the hassle of changing email addresses every time you change ISPs.

If you have consulted the Malware thread and found nothing, then yes. Use the Crucial System Scanner and CPU-Z to confirm what you need to put inside.

you can go to your BIOS setup and change the CD to the first boot up device, then your HD. This way, it will always boot up from CD first.

Alternatively, put the old drive in a caddy and access it via USB, but make sure in your BIOS that booting from USB is prohibited, or there may be a conflict with installed OS on boot-up (shouldn't be if set to boot from HDD first, but just in case)

If only using it for basic applications (internet, music, pics etc) then I cant see installing more memory helping much, as they arent strenuous tasks. If your hard drive is getting full (>70%) then i'd get another HD (and backup pics onto disc ..ive learnt my lesson the hard way). Also best to try a spybot s&d scan, and defrag the HD once a mnth or so if you dont already

You can either change ISP to one which gives out different IP addresses whenever the router is rebooted be.g. talktalk or use a 3rd party proxy server. Third party proxy servers generally slow-down internet access unacceptably IMO. IP address GEO-mapping is only approximate & only gives a general locality/town at best, so your address/personal details are perfectly safe

You cant really get a free 'all in one' The best 3 free av programs are AVG, AVAST and AVIRA As a general id suggest AVAST (personally I use Avira but theres some updating issues of late) The windows firewall is fine for general use but if you want to have more control then PC TOOLS FIREWALL, COMODO and ZONEALARM are the 3 main ones (I use pctools) MALWAREBYTES as a secondary scanner (...
