All that happens when you go into P or N is the oil supply the the converter is shut off with just a minimum amount of oil in the converter, hence the creep.
The 722.6 never completely locks up,,you can prove this yourself. just drive along say at 70mph and blip the throttle slightly, the RPM will change but the car speed does not

Thanks for the prompt reply. How do I diagnose which of these it might be, and if the pump is it a quick and easy repair/replacement (thinking of the return journey without heat).

With the car stationary, a 'MPG' figure is meaningless.
Are you sure the display isn't reading fuel usage in 'somethings' per hour, then switches to MPG once a certain speed is reached?

First thing Tony is to slip the serpentine belt off and start up, this will eliminate all of the gear on the front of the engine and just leave you to listen to the engine. Do not run it too long like this but a few mins is OK from cold or warm

The C36 engine started life as an E280/320. There were two manual options for an E320, a standard 5 speed PLUS....... a very rare dog-leg close ratio box. If you could get hold of one of these.....................
Good luck though, I've only seen one!!

Its usually the Control unit in the gearbox that fails, £1065 + vat for the part and labour to fit, plus oil and time on star.

Sounds like the engine is locking up and the starter has burnt out. How far did you turn the engine over after fitting the chain ? On most late model cars the valves hit the head if the timing is a long way out.

I would not presume to argue with a Mercedes specialist, but I would want to be very, very sure of the diagnosis before I let someone take my head off.
Have all of the fuel injection system parts been verified as working correctly, are you regularly topping up the coolant?
How many miles has the car done and what service history does it have?
The more info you can give the better the ...

I regularly drive my CLK 208 for 20 miles or so, whilst the light is on therefore using my reserve. I think it mentions how much this reserve is in the owners handbook. Sorry, can't add more than that.

Hi TP, that's bad news. Any idea where it's losing the compression? Valves? Rings? I'm guessing it was on a cold engine?

i doubt you have any missing, are there open holes other than the broken grey connector? the grey pipe is vac feed from manifold, purple is headlight height adjuster, red is climate control flaps (if i remember correctly), green could be folding rear headrests - not sure. if you blank off the open end on the broken grey connector you should find this will help the headlights...
