pinion bearing preload?

just how critical is this? i am building an rear with a pinion shim kit (no crush sleeve then) so will jsut taking the slack out until it has a little drag be good enough? I can't get a in-# wrench local that goes low enough (only to 25 in-lb....not the 6-12 I need) could i put a dial indicator on it with a thick shim set to find my axial movement of say .030" then take .035" out to give a .005 preload? I know tha tis how a Dana...

Slide hammer works like a charm. Autozone has one they call an "Axle Puller" that with some finagalling will fit on the rear end axle (it was a tight fit on an 8", not sure on a 4 lug). In fact, I still have it and need to return it so I can get my $35 back...or maybe I'll just keep it at this point. Thanks for all the ideas I may have to rent one later.I guess it will be after the holiday but I actually took my hub and turned it backwards and used my lug nuts to fit it loosle onto the axle and tugged(slide hammer effect) it for about 30 min and did not work for nothing. The other side came out fine but the races are either stuck to the bearings or it was made that way either way its 1 piece now!I figure its probabally a matter of force...

there are two possibilities, one the outer bearing race is rusted to the housing, or more likely the housing has a minor bend in it that is causing a bit of binding. _________________ 64 falcon 66 mustang 76 el camino my mind is aglow with whiriling transient nodes of thought careening through a cosmic vapor of invention

I am looking to upgrade my 62 and was wondering if mustang control arms could bolt on it? my current arms are one piece and I would like to go to a coilover tube upper arm (my lowers are much different and know they won't swap too easy) so does anyone have some stock uppers laying around loose they could measure for me? _________________ Rule: Torque = Fun , Turbo's make Torque

i no that this isn't a 4x4 offroading site but has and one ever doubled a np205 with a np205. all i have seen is doubling a np203 with a np205. i would want to go with the 2 np205 seeing how i have 2 on hand. and the 205 has the same ratio as the 203. it will have more girth but owell. _________________ 1978 1/2 f250xlt ranger super cab lowboy soon to have my f150 runnin gear and drive train....

So here it goes. I have a noise that has developed in the mustang it has a c4. The noise sounds like a grinding sound almost like the driveshaft is hitting the tunnel. It occurs right below the floor shifter or atleast it sounds like it. The weird part is it only occurs in reverse or when rolling back and if i accelerate the noise does accelerate like its rotating faster with the driveshaft or ...

I am in the process of restoring a 65 mustang 200 6. I would like to eventually hang a t5 on the 200 and am trying to figure out what works and what doesn't. This Mustang is a 68 block with a 75 head( different story), The trans is a 3 speed 3.03. The tag on the trans is HEF-CW which if I am reading the web right is the 3.03 from a 66 289. I am not sure which Bellhousing I have but as I have...
