1. A rebuild can take several hours depending on how large the drives are. A rebuild will finish faster if you boot into the Adaptec controller and leave it there until it finishes.
2. Since you do not have a
hot spare, the volume will be unavailable during the rebuild. I would suggest you invest in another hard drive so you have a hot spare.

Well, your drive has failed for one reason or another, and it looks like the damage is on that particular partition.
You might try a program called Spinrite... it might get you a little more data out of the drive, but I'm thinking that, unless you want to spend a whole lot of money on professional
data recovery, you've already recovered everythign you're likely to off that drive....

Oftentimes, the problem is that you have a Windows Explorer window open to the drive in question. If you close all your Explorer windows, then you will be able to use the
applet, which tells the drive to park the heads and removes the drive from the list of accessible devices, among other things.
Any programs that are expecting that drive to be online will likely fault or freeze ...
