what is making you need to update the driver?
have you checked Windows Update to see it there's a driver available through them?
surprising, with
Windows 7 I just installed, I haven't gone to any manufacturer web site or CD for drivers; Windows update installed them all no problems

Yes, you should be able to use it without any problems. I've used them hundreds of times on work computers, and I've never encountered a monitor or computer that wouldn't work with the adapter.

So if I'm understanding you correctly you like to run the monitor not at its
native resolution, and it normally stretches the image. You changed the settings, and when you reverted back to what you had, now it has black bars on the sides?
My only suggestions come from similar, but different experiences I have had, may be useless to you, but may help out, you never know. I know on ...

Did you connect your monitor to the video card? If you did, then it did detect something otherwise you wouldnt see windows load up at all.
Did u let windows install its proprietary drivers?
or did u actually use the drivers provided with the card?
or did you download the latest drivers from Nvidia?
What windows are you using? XP, Vista, 7?

Have you also replaced the memory (ram)on the comp recently ???
Make sure the ram is properly seated
Could be the ram on the cards is faulty...time to
RMA if the card is still under warranty
