You have been given the best answer by the resident virus expert, crunchie. You can be sure that what he has told you is 100% correct and you do not need anyone else to confirm what he has told you. "No anti-virus program will attack legitimate software"

• • • • Installation of XP Pro begins but at first reboot the installation process starts all over again rather than picking up from where it left off. I now recall having a similar instance of this. Try this; At the first reboot as the screen goes blank, remove the CD from the DVD drive and let it continue to reboot, it should pick up where it left off and at some point will ask you to insert the CD to...

Mmm. Well, mine were all okay. Came with a pretty decent spec and a samsung SATA II drive, internal layout was good (even if annoying because the case/motherboard combo was nonstandard). Only PCs ive ever had problems with are Acer and Packard Bell.

It has actually been postulated that (some) AV companies create viri in order to sell their product. It's a crock that the AV programs attack legitimate software though.

Caperjack - I think it doesn't really matter if they don't respond. We might get some new solutions about this type of problem. Maybe someone looking for a solution might come across this thread.

I'd have to replace my motherboard for that jbennet. I like AMD. Core2's are nowhere close to $76 like the athlon is. The Phenom II X2 is $102. The lowest Core2 Duo is $120 plus the mobo I'd have to buy. Yeah the athlon doesn't have L3 cache at all.

It could be faulty ram or ram not specific to your PC. Ram have different mhz. DDR400 is backward compatible so if you require DDR 333mhz, you can use DDR400 but you cannot use dDDR333 with DDR266 mixed. If you are using AMD and a Nvidia video card you need ATI video card. There have been some compatibility erros when using Nvidia with AMD.

Digitallocksmith is right - most plastic flexible tubes will pick up lots of static. Touching a chip with that may kill it. Better use compressed air in cans to blow the dust away. AFAIK pulling cards and sticking them back in a running computer is not that good either and doesn't make sense - this won't make your computer beep. It just silently crashes. But what puzzles me now is why ...

Yes, crunchie is correct. You can use any card with the PCI Express socket, you just cant do SLI on an AMD motherbaord, or crossfire on an Nvidia one. Ive got an geforce on an intel chipset myself. And its not stupid question, indeed, its a very common one.
