Create valuable content. Is your content worthy of being read by millions of people? Remember that the purpose of content is to provide value to others. Do you provide genuine value, and is it the best you’re capable of providing? When I sit down to write, I sometimes imagine myself standing on an outdoor concert stage before an audience of a million people. Then I ask myself, “What shall I say to this audience of fellow human beings?”...

Link building is probably one of the most important things to do and counts for a lot in the search engine result pages. Of course there is a lot more that can be done. You can submit your site to RSS feeds, and bookmark in the social networks such as Delicious, Stumble Upon, Digg etc. Business directories and article directories are good places for submissions as well.

We don't really have an in-house to bring someone into. We are a self funded team of 2 developers who have built a site. We don't have funds to bring on someone full time or really even part time (unless they'd work for equity).

Hello
Being new to internet marketing I find myself being bogged down by all of the promotion sites that say they have the answers that will give ones site the exposure it needs. Trial and error can get awfully expensive. Any suggestions?

It gets buzz going about your business while building backlinks (links to your website from other sites on the 'net) all at one time. (And backlinks are a critical component of how your site ranks in the search engines.)
How do you do ...

Well, I don't consider Google Adwords, PPC and affiliate marketing to be advanced SEO.
Anyway, in order to increase traffic you need to diversify.
So I suggest that you do:
*Blog and forum commenting with anchor text to your site or products
*Social bookmarks and social networking (the old word of mouth still works).
*Article submission to directories
*Traffic Exchanges to create ...
