Coins in Jewelry - Collectors...

Hi, Erika! Welcome to the neighborhood. First of all, if you are considering removing the coins from the jewelry, I'd advise againast trying to do it yourself if the coins are, as you say, soldered into the retainer. You may do more damage to the coins in doing so. Even if, in fact, the retainer is soldered in place just to hold the coin and the solder is not contacting any surface of the coin, itself, you must still use extreme care to...

I agree the lincoln reverse looks incused. You cannot have a dime on a cent planchet, but you can have a cent on a dime planchet.

Thanks to the boys at CRO. This is a NEWP. Text below by CRO. This coins slays me. Posted this ATS as well. MJ 'Trumpet in Eye Socket' Conder Token Halfpenny. MS66 RB [NGC] Middlesex-Shackeltons, D&H-478A. An incredibly high grade token, with about 25% faded mint red and nearly perfect prooflike surfaces. The obverse depicts the bust of a man with the legend, WE NE'ER SHALL LOOK UPON HIS LIKE AGAIN. The reverse depicts...

I consider many of the Heritage catalogs to be reference works. I save them all. The Boca Collection knocked my socks off as well.

In my opinion, I'd leave the coins in the jewelry and enjoy them -- especially if they are common pieces. I gave my mom a dollar coin necklace a few years ago and outside of the holder it might have been worth a little more but she enjoyed it just the same. I think it's only worth taking the time and effort to remove coins from jewelry if the coins themselves are particularly rare. It's also a ...

A very neat specimen of a 10 centavos from the state of Chihuahua, Mexico. I think these would be considered counterstamps, not chopmarks. A 25 looks the same in Mexico as it does in the U.S. What makes you think the counterstamp is from the U.S.?

While it is a rendition of the original obverse, it's clearly not the same. In addition to different design elements, the relief cannot be nearly as high as on the original coins. Modern US Mint practices seem to favor low-relief, lifeless coins. I will not be collecting them.

I see images now. Thinking The only reason I asked, cent on a dime planchet, is that a cent blank will not fit into a dime size striking chamber. Even if a blank cent planchet centered it's self over the chamber, when striking, the die would cup the planchet... big time.

James, Perhaps you can help me with this issue. in 2003 I cracked a NGC Morgan PF-65. Lightly dipped it, submitted to PCGS in 2003 and PCGS body- bagged it as "altered surfaces". It looks a lot better than the pre-crack version. What might you suggest?
