Sorry, you may not get a lot of attention on this while running a non-standard kernel. It's often hard enough figuring out
what went wrong when you have what the other person has. This leads to a couple of questions. Why the 2.6.31 kernel? Are you trying to connect to the VMWare server web gui from that server itself? Is it a 64bit FF/Flash issue?

Welcome to the CentOS fora. There have been problems in the past similar to what you describe with installing from some
DVD drives. Don't know specifically about USB DVD. This shiny new Wiki article may be of interest to you. Feedback appreciated if you try it. http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/InstallFromUSBkey It does require ISO images of some sort, but works for me with either CD or DVD ...

Do you have
ncurses-devel installed? yum install ncurses-devel Building as root is considered to be a dangerous practice.

Have you seen the upstream
bug report ? I think the error you are seeing is a result of that bug. Until a fixed version of the hmaccalc package is released, there are two ways to proceed -- (1) follow the hints in the bug report (a bit of a kludge) (2) add the flag and argument --without fips to your rpmbuild command line Please let me know which method you choose to use and, ...

I think you don't actually require any
i386 rpms at all if you're not using any i386 programs. But if you only want to install the firefox, you may go to http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html to download the bz2 archiver. The current version is :firefox-3.5.3.tar.bz2 And then you can install it on the linux OS. Hope it could help you!

Ah. I am doing something blatantly stupid. The box in question is really running CentOS 4. Sorry.
