Stromberg Carburater Damper -...

Hi there. The damper helps control the amount of fuel that goes into the engine. The high it rises into the housing the more fuel that comes up out of the jet since the needling is being pulled up.

The cylinder visible at the intake is not the damper, nor the choke. These are what are known as "variable venturi" carburetors (or "constant depression" if you are British :G) and that cylinder forms the top of the venturi. Chevy never used variable venturis, although ISTR Ford experimented briefly in the late 70s with them (before moving on to EFI). Basically, the piston rises in response to air flow into...

That's what I put in the TR3...an Optima. BTW, they are not gel batteries, but AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) batteries...different then gel batteries. There are so many advantages to AGM's, especially for cars that see less use then a daily driver, and one that may be stored for several months. BTW, I can attest to the longevity of AGM's. I just replaced the original Panasonic AGM in my '92 Miata last month...with, of course, an...

Just make sure that you have enough air venting to allow the fan to pull air out and not suck the walls in, especially when the filters get a little blocked and cut the volume of air down.

Jeremy- I think I have 3 Amco boxes sitting around, and all of them have that issue with holes in them - pretty sure my current box is bent slightly around the problem. I'd still use the box for what its worth, maybe get creative with an exacto knife if you must make some room. Randy

Do a web search for "Smithy's mufflers" , "Mellow Tone mufflers" & " Cherry Bomb mufflers". A single steel pack muffler will give you the tone & volume you're looking for. Mellow Tone (an Indiana company) will advise the correct length for a 4 cyl engine & I think they still do custom work if it comes to that. FRank

I think I can answer number 2. If they are anything like the spitfire clips
you can go up to the local hardware store and pick up some small flat clips
in the screw isle normally in the small boxes on top of the bulk screws.

There has been some prior discussion of sticky chokes, with the consensus opinion that most sticky chokes come from the jets not operating smoothly where they slide up-and-down in the carbs. Remedies include polishing the outside of the jets and lubricating them with silicone grease. The lube was enough to make mine quit sticking.

As in "chatters" when just engaging? IOW, you don't have a continuous vibration in those gears, rather just on first engagement as the clutch is released?

'71 have a squirrel cage fan or blades? If the squirrel cage is wired backwards, it will work, but not very well. Did you ever do any polarity swapping on the chassis? Is you heater tap (valve) opening all the way, and clean? All sorts of crap builds up in them. On older cars, every couple of years I remove the heater hoses (both) on engine side of firewall, and flush with a garden hose and ...

Not likely to hurt anything, just a waste of money, IMO. As long as the engine does not knock or ping under load, the fuel octane is high enough. And there is no advantage to having the fuel octane any higher than required. Most octane boosters do almost nothing anyway, at least not at such low ratios.

Oh, wait. Is it supposed to be like that? I just checked the TRF assembly manual and it is actually listed like that for early differentials. This was was removed from a 1974, but it's been off before judging by the differential mount repair. It looks like that is correct for the later units as well. Hmmm...I would have thought there would be more of a plug type assembly.

Does sound like you are missing a section of casing. There should be a short section that doesn't go anywhere, and just protects the end of the rack. Stanpart 108860, but I can't find a drawing of it.

As you can see from the picture the Plastigauge measures much better than the 004" last time.
