Big Load, Yep, checking the Flagstaff radar it's looking like a Flag/Mogollon Rim event. Barely a drizzle up towards Page. Funny to hear that guy talking about Kaibeto. Spent many happy times up that way, skied Navajo Mt. a half dozen times. Sometimes taking the boat to Rainbow Bridge and hoofing up thru the canyons. Sometimes leaving the car by a hogan near the airstrip at Navajo Mt. and going up the south side. Incredible place. Skiing...

That's beautiful! I can't wait to do this. We live near DC so almost all of my trips have been on the East Coast. It's amazing how much different the scenery is out there.

Thanks for the report and nice pics. You had a lot more snow cover than when I passed through early September.

( Tarol, The problems in the canyon are created, for the most part, by the graffiti artists and Koreans. I don't know a permit system would solve any problems, unless you it were to limit access and had a strong volunteer group to help enforce it like the SGWA. I've got many tales of accidents and accidents waiting to happen in Icehouse Canyon...practically all of them after the first snow until the ice is gone all the way to...

( \(wbtravis5152 @ Dec. 10 2009, 8:40 pm\) QUOTE Now tarol, you know next to no one gets a permit to day hike up Icehouse Canyon, I have not done it in about 5 years. I didn't know, I don't work on the Angeles NF. ?I do know that you are supposed to have one, and it's a shame that the Angeles doesn't enforce it like the San Bernardino does. ?May help cut down on the vandalism if they did. ?And when we tally up numbers of...

( \(City Man @ Dec. 09 2009, 3:10 pm\) QUOTE I have not been to Dog Canyon over by Alamogordo NM in about 20 + years, you can also camp there, a good day hike, an overnight hike will mean that you most carry all your water, if you do hike it let me know for it is in my backyard sort of, I will ask City Woman to ask her friend who I took on an overnight backpack trip during the Thanksgiving holiday for he mentioned he likes to camp there a lot...

Dog Canyon

( The central New Mexico part threw me off, I always seem to think of this neck of the desert as south east NM. Was just over at the Story Panel Petroglyph just past Fort Hancock with some students from England who have read about it and wanted to see it for themselves. Was a little strange having people from another country that seem to be a little more knowledgeable about my back yard then I am. Sounds good to me DD,...

( A fresh pallet. Last time I was up in Lytle Creek, the trail sign was down and covered in tags, there was an abandoned tent at the upper camp site, and the fire pit at the lower site was full of shells and fresh ammo. ,

That's a really un-helpful link. We discussed beaches a few times before. One I know of is Paradise Beach between Mussel Point & Point Sal. http://www.backpacker.com/cgi-bin....1129521 I'd recommend something in the Silver Peak Wilderness. Salmon Creek to Buckeye Spring is my fave. Here's a much more helpful link: http://www.ventanawild.org/trails.html

( That's a pretty bold prediction on that website there, forecasting actual amounts of precipitation weeks in advance. The National Weather service only puts out probabilistic-type forecasts \(i.e. "50% chance of greater than normal rainfall in the period 8-14 days"\). ( May or June? Any chance you could push it back into July? The problem is that the higher elevations, where many trails would be "kid friendly" \(Tuolumne\), are still under snow cover, and the Valley, which you should also see, is surrounded by 3000 foot massive walls. ,

( If weather is important, you could hike the loop around Orlando on the Florida Trail, doing both the Eastern and Western corridors. There may be a lot of road walking on the Western half.
