Need Help finding Florida...

( I can't think of a backcountry site I've ever stayed in that had drinkable water. I have always had to treat my water or carry it with me. I think at Cumberland, there was a water pump some distance away, but not at the campsite. As for FL, the Myakka River St Park has 30 + miles of backpacking trails and they have water pumps at some of the sites. These pumps are not guaranteed to work, however....

5-6 night hike
Published (2009-12-15 11:15:00)
( The BMT is 93.5 miles through the park, but I was thinking about the 80.1 miles from Big Creek Ranger Station \(I didn't do the road walk to Davenport Gap\) to Fontana Dam \(staying on the Lakeshore Trail while the BMT goes on to Twenty Mile\). I should have been more clear. I did it in two sections I did the two day trip north of US441 in February and the section south of 441 in November right after Thanksgiving. I...

( We were in that area Labor day and did the Mountain Water Scenic Byway \(the start of which is in Lauada, about 10 miles from Bryson City\) plus some day hiking around Standing Indian. Mountain Waters I sure wish I could get back up into the mountains this time of year! , )

Need Help finding Florida...

( Whiteblaze.net has forum links to different trails, Florida Trails is one of the links. Try that posting for more info. I think you could help the Florida Trails Association greatly by getting involved in making trails and creating campsites closer to water. I'm sure that if you volunteer on Whiteblaze someone will contact you. , )

5-6 night hike
Published (2009-12-14 22:44:00)
(Mocs123 @ Dec. 14 2009, 10:32 pm) QUOTE The Lakeshore Trail is a nice suggestion except you would be hard pressed to string that out to 5-6 days. You could do the entire BMT through the Smokies which includes the Lakeshore Trail in that time, and it all should be away from the crowds with the exception of Mt Sterling. When I did the BMT Through the Smokies I only saw two other hikers the whole time. Isn?t the BMT like 100 miles through the...

Clingman's Dome road will be closed. The other roads depend on the weather from day to day. The trails at the lower elevations should be hikable regardless. You might have some trouble on the trails going to Mt. LeCont. If you get there and the roads are closed there are plenty of other options in the surrounding area. You can catch the AT north or south of the park. There's Panthertown ...

You might try hiking a stretch of the Florida Trail through Ocala National Forest. I know they had some wildfires here recently (early 2009?) and I'm not sure what areas were affected but a ?hike from Juniper Springs out to the Hidden Pond area was nice when I was there a couple of years ago. ?It's only about 5 miles and the Hidden Pond campsite was quite beautiful.

( We found that yes, there were campsites with fire rings along the way. We saw a number of designated camping spots, so I doubt you'd have trouble finding one. I am not sure whether camping is allowed elsewhere since we stayed in designated campsites each night. Yes, we needed a permit, but we were there during hunting season. They wanted to know how many people were on the trails and then ...
