Depending on what you are expecting to see for lows the Exped will most likely be fine. I have the regular DownMat 9 and will have it out this weekend in MN where it has been getting to -20. (But it may be warming up a bit.) The foam pad is good insurance although I have never had a mat get punctured when on snow. You could do it yourself with a piece of gear though, I suppose. And it will make it warmer no mater what pad you already have....

Another down question

( From my understanding, yes, different geese, different ages, different methods of collection. It's probably a marketing ploy, but it's said that the higher fill-power stuff is more often collected from older geese that are not the force-fed, foie gras producing kind. Whether or not that is collected from nesting sites somewhat humanely, or plucked from live subjects, I can't remember. It's just another exploitive animal...

(jcsouthcentral @ Dec. 17 2009, 1:19 pm) QUOTE So I should add a closed cell pad, even with a downmat? I was hoping to keep the weight down by purchasing the exped mat as a stand alone solution. I hadn't really considered the possibility of the mat failing. I'd highly recommend it. My second time out with an Exped mat and it developed a slow leak resulting in me waking up with the ground against my back. It was...

DOWN vs. SYNTHETIC
Published (2009-12-17 11:52:00)
(Chogori @ Dec. 17 2009, 8:39 am) QUOTE thanks for the info It was mentioned that the lamilte version of the HL should last longer through repeated washing due to the silicone coating. The trade off is that it should be just slightly less compresible and just a tad heavier. I don't have any numbers on those things though. I didn't ask about clumping as I haven't experienced it with the synthetics I have used and...

Singing the Praise for Steripen
Published (2009-12-17 21:46:00)
( I recently came back from a seven-month RTW trip. I brought along a Steripen Adventurer and a Nalgene hard plastic bottle because I didn't want to buy bottled water at local stores every single day. The countries I visited were Portugal, Poland, Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Mongolia and China. Municipal water in these countries ranged from fairly clear to crystal clear -- but not potable. I filled my Lexan with tap water taken from hotels,...

I wouldn't go that big for only 40-50 pounds. ?Try again with all your gear, not just tent and sleeping bag. ?It will take some practice, but you'd be surprised how much you can cram into all the little gaps. ?I can go for a week with 60 pounds in Aether 70. ?For what it's worth though, I don't think the Aether suspension can handle as much as you can stuff into 85l. The Argon is probably a better...

What do you consider affordable? The REI shuksan is quite good, it is $300. The REI taku jacket is also nice but not as breathable; it is $160 I believe There are of course alternatives by mountain hardware, The north face, arc'teryx etc etc

I don'r know about NEOS in particular, but I'll say this. A long time ago, in the Army, in cold northern New England - standard issue gear included a pair of 'galoshes"; a pair of rubber over-boots. I didn't think much of them until I tried them. I was amazed at how much warmth they added to what amounted to a pair of regular uninsulated leather summer boots with wool socks. So, in general, the...

FWIW, I frequently slide down rocks in the desert in my Exos (can't recall the model) and haven't had a single tear, scuff, or ripped seam. And I'm heavy. No elastic around the ankle, but they're the toughest pants I've ever owned.

My last Georgia winter trip was February 08 and was flat 30 pounds total with food water and fuel. I was prepared for lows of 20F, maybe 10F.

Different conditions call for different gear. I have a few balaclavas and an OR Gorilla which incorporates a face mask. Plus at Psolar face mask and full head piece. If you are walking into heavy wind that is blowing snow in your face a full mask that covers everything that your goggles don't is imperative. Outside of that I tend to wear the bala once I am in camp or in the tent when I sleep. ...

I love Osprey packs and was going to get an Aether 70 but held off as I heard they were doing the redesign. Now I may go see if I can find an old one. I hate front-loaders. On combo-loading packs I never use the front zip option. I take the sleeping bag compartment divider out of every pack I own that has one and never use that zipper either. They are just a place to leak and/or fail in my ...

( On trail, or off? ?On trails, I rarely bother, unless I know I'll be going through deep snow or brushy sections. ?Away from trails, I almost always have them.
