Turns out : Burnt out all clutch packs Syncros 1 and 2 Destroyed plenatry gear 3 And all the seals in the box. Total cost (inclusive of 2 new oil coolers and vdo) - just under $3000 This is pretty much a full rebuild . Let...

Torque converter no lockup
Published (2009-11-26 21:23:00)
Have checked TCM output - OK Have checked lockup solenoid - OK Changed fluid and filter today - black, filthy, and even some mud fount in the pan! Transmission seems a bit more responsive with the fresh oil and filter, however the lockup still isn't working. Solenoid was checked while the pan was off, clicking on and off, plunger was moving, drawing about 900mA. I hope is was the correct solenoid anyway, standalone one at the rear of the...

Did you check continuity from the TCU wiring harness to the solenoid? There
could be a break in the cable. Check resistance across the solenoid, should
be 11-15 ohms. Lockup is controlled by the TPS as well so check that too.

mine starting playing up after a similiar trip to the NT. Whilst i have not
pulled mine apart yet I am betting on diff pinion bearings, mine is
actually worse on over run. I am getting a used unit to put in (mainly
cause my daughter is using the XJ for her daily transport) and then will
look into what has failed. I noticed with mine it was pumping oil out the
diff breather, I imagine it was cause...

See... there's more to a vehicle conversion than simply swapping the steering gear to the other side!
Going by that pictorial display, the US version's auto fluids are "exchanging heat" in the coolest section of the radiator whereas, the Oz variant is trying to "exchange heat" in the hottest section surrounded by the engine coolant straight out of a hot motor... that's been well though out ...

which year model xj do you have? they changed the cam in the 96 on models.
This new cam had a wider torque band. Maybe look into cam swaps to give
more low down power/torque

I pulled the " rumble seat" out of my previous 4WD and had been contemplating the need to relocate the spare wheel (to the roof or swing-away wheel carrier), now it appears I can have my cake & eat it too as you can see in the picture below the cargo area of the XJ can accommodate both leaving my roof basket free for additional luggage
This is how it looked on a "dry run fitment" apologies...

hi luke, welcome to this crazy forum. apparently you'll need to be careful of vibrations from the rear drive shaft over 2inches, (so alot of 4wd shops told me). i have a 3inch lift and am lucky not to have vibes. had it lifted for about 6 months with police passing me without a problem, but jungle is right about the insurance. good thing is with a 3inch lift on an xj, it still looks normal....

ZJ & TJ fit.
Otherwise Magna or Falcon - but the excessive backspacing can be an issue on the XJ.

After lurking on the forums for a couple of years i decided to finally give up on the toyotas and i bought a '95 XJ sport.
It cost 5 grand and come with an alloy bullbar, spotties, radio, 2 inch lift (shithouse), and brand new 31's (shithouse) with a home made rear wheel carrier which is pretty good.
Ive given it a decent service and new fluids almost everywhere. It generally runs on the ...
