If Mongolia is too much of an adventure, do the HK route. Plane round trip is 2000 rmb (cheaper if you book your ticket in advance). Train round trip is 1000 rmb. For plane, get a Beijing-Shenzhen ticket (cheaper than flying directly to HK). Good luck.

there is only one thing you have to take care, which is make sure apply working permit and residence permit within the first 3odays after you arrive.

One more thought: Beijing is notorious for wanting to see that bank account statement, but that's not the case for other PSB offices in China. It may be worth a try to head for Shijiazhuang, Jinan, or somewhere else in a nearby province to go for an extension on your current entry. Qingdao has been reputed to be fairly easy going on this.
