I wanted to copy a boot partition off of a RAID 1 array to the Kingston SSD but Acronis won't let me clone from the dynamic disk.

sloeer: "Are any of the 5400rpm F2 or 7200rpm F3 going to be heard over my intel stock cpu fan? (the case is an Antec P150 with some rubber standoffs for disk drives)" Rubber standoffs are too hard to properly decouple a HDD. As fot Intel sock HSFs, I only have experience of some P4 and early C2Q. P4 was outright horrible rattler, C2Q wasn't good either but quite a bit better. I guess i5 HSFs must be better than either...

Alright... I bought these drives back in August and was too lazy to write up on it, so I'm finally I'm getting to it. I purchased one from newegg and then another from Fry's when they had them on sale in October. The newegg one is Made in Korean 2009.07, the Fry's one is Made in China 2009.08. Both perform and sound pretty similar. The HD154UI is definitely louder than the 1TB HD103SI. The extra platter adds some more...

I have a good experience with 2.5" hdds for desktop use. No problem at all. As wrote by others, these disks are smaller, quieter and more frugal on power consumption. I don't know if a 24/7 use could damage them: my pc is active only 6 to 8 hs p/day.

Just curious: which store? Since usually Hitachi HDDs have cost extra here in Finland.
I'm not in a hurry to expand my capacity (just swapped a dead 1TB Greenpower to 2TB Greenpower so I'll be happy with my capacity for a while) and I know for sure that 5-platter 7200rpm certainly cannot be comparable to 2TB GPs so it's just a matter of curiousity to me.
However 7K2000 isn't ...

Each platter adds noise, so 3 > 2 > 1. First you should decide whether 500GB is enough for what you want to do; that tells you whether to even consider anything other than single platter.
I have a single-platter F2 that runs about 3C above room temperature with very close to zero air flow (Nexus at 550 RPM), so temperature is not an issue.

eSata I presume? A good idea, though if space permits it is equally effective to have the 2.5" drive inside the case and wrap it in some insulation or foam material.

Is there a link for it? I can't find it on Samsung's site.
Spec's definitely look promising. Wonder if it's quiet? We'll have to wait and see. Samsung drives always provoke lots of controversy here and elsewhere.

Fry's is having a sale on WD10EADS drives this week for $60. So I went down today to pick one up.
As usual with WD products, there's are a lot of different sub-models on available. From the deal forums, people have been getting WD10EADS-00L5B1 (3-platter), WD10EADS-00M2B0 (2-platter), and WD10EADS-00P8B0.
At the Fry's I went to, the model I got was WD10EADS-00P8B0 Made in Malaysia...

Nice short tutorial.
"Now my only problem is that using SpeenFan it triggers SMART values, which spins up the drive even if the partition is unmounted. I need to solve that"
That's the easy part. Just disable temperature monitoring of selected hard drives. Temperature monitoring of HDDs is performed by reading SMART data. HDD's internal SMART logics read temperature sensor ...

I'm building a few entry-level systems for family members, all basic home PC usage, nothing fancy, "just" quiet. I have a hard time deciding between 2.5" and 3.5" disks. I like the intrinsic benefits the smaller drives offer (lower noise level, less power consumption), but I'm not yet sure if using them for run-of-the-mill systems intended for average users & usage is a good idea.

Are you going to use this drive for the OS/boot or just a data drive to store media? I think 5400rpm is fine for as a HTPC boot drive, if all you intend to do is to just boot, load up the media player, and play back videos. But if you want to use it beyond that, like playing games, running programs, etc... you might want the faster 7200rpm drive.

The Samsung F2 500GB SATA drives (HD502HI) are very close to silent, and at least in the US are incredibly cheap. Probably a bit slower than your old Baracudas, but not much.
