I'm not Grammar Girl , but I'll take a stab at this... Basically, whatever you decide, be consistent. If you decide to use both ('all right' for narration, and 'alright' for dialogue), make sure you stick with that convention all the way through your story. My dictionary lists 'alright' as a spelling variation of 'all right', but that it's use is disputed (a disputed usage). So, my advice...

I'm dropping the issue -- so yes, let's move on. But the thread should remain open so that folks can discuss effective strategies for self-promotion.

You're so right--it is frightening when the dream begins to morph into reality. But it's a good kind of fear. Ride it for the thrills, don't be afraid of the spills, there's always another chance.

Hi Huicke-- You've done a great job of pulling us into the mood of whatever horror it is that claims him -- perhaps more psychological than physical. Unlike previous readers, I had no problem with the verb tenses. There was a stream of consciousness feel to it that communicated well. I would, however, be inclined to tighten the language. As an example, here's the opener: He was fundamentally damaged but he just didn't know it...

Dear Mr. Sterling 13: Having reviewed this month's entries to date, I discover that I have a half-dozen oughta-vote-fors and a half-dozen gotta-vote-fors. Please grant me an exception to policy and allow me to vote at least ten times. Don't blame me; blame it on the damned contestants who keep outdoing themselves and each other. Sincerely, HE

Ideas keep changing.
Published (2009-12-18 10:09:00)
As I write, I keep a file of notes. When new ideas come to me, I write them down in the notes file. After the first draft is done, go back to read the manuscript, and then my notes. If the changes still seem like a good idea, I implement them. That way, I haven't lost anything, but I keep on a regular schedule.

If it required large rewrites, I would not do it. The thing is, there are an infinite number of ways to write a story, to twist the plot, add characters, change this and change that ... at one point, you just have to stick with something. Otherwise, you like you said, you'll never get anything done.

you've got no sense of past or present tense. For instance. "I regard the moon for a while." well you either "regardED" or you "are regarding." can't really say I enjoyed it because the lack of tenses kept me from getting involved in the story.

I like your suggestions, Taramoc, in general. I do have a few concerns. First, I want to make sure I got the sequence correct: Week 1: story A submitted Week 2: Story A discussed, Story B submitted Week 3: Discussion of Story A closed. Story B discussed. Story C submitted. Week 4: Dicussion of Story B closed. Story C discussed. Story D submitted. ... Repeat as necessary ... I ...

Okay...I have a question...I don't know if I'll have time to participate, but wanted to be clear on this... In regards to the theme, is it just ninjas or pirates (which ever we choose), or does the story have to contain some sort of choice within it, or both? And (I'm sorry, I'm dense) what's the whole inspiration thing in front of the computer thing? Is that part of the theme?

Hello Colony, Welcome to the forums! One thing, I think the moderators usually like it if you post your Story in the Stories section, and then create a post with a link back to your story. I think it cuts down on server space or something. Anyway, just a note. Now, you asked for opinions. Mine are below. Remember, these are just my opinions, and I am a horrible writer. Ignore me ...
