Bruce, you are right about the purpose they serve. I actually quite enjoy Burswood and Collier park is great for my ego!
I have heard good things about Araleun lately. Adlo played there recently, he would know best.

Not for a few years, but worth it. Loved the greens and the walk is pretty spectacular.

By a remarkable coincidence I have been researching that very subject recently, as there is a slight chance that I may be able to visit San Diego next August, and Hawaii is a logical stopover.
Enter Maui Golf into Google and you'll find lots of info.
Maui appears a much better golfing destination than Oahu.

Only played there once but it seems to be a very uninspiring course. 55 bucks is a joke.
