IS300 Guru needed with nagging...

Before you go on a shopping spree guessing which part it may be...just do a compression check first to verify your engine is in healthy condition. Even if it sounds great...you can still have low compression on one or more cylinders.

yep check terminals and connection, also batteries do and can go out within months of a purchase, bad cells in battery i imagine would be your problem. Get your battery traded in under warranty.

You don't have a vaccum leak. You don't have a compression problem. You have a variable valve timing problem. Checking compression and searching for vacuum leaks, while always fun, won't solve your problem. There are three possible components that can cause your DTC to be set. The oil control valve, which is the most common part to fail, the VVTi actuator, or the ECU. If your car ran fine, but was continuing to set a code it...

Change the flugs.
Do you have any friends. Or local guys in your area with IS300's? I suggest swapping ignitors with another is300 to see if that fixes the issue.
If neither of those work. Maybe a wiring issue.

Can anyone point me into the right direction? This shouldn't be too hard for a seasoned mechanic. I'm just a noob with this car.

any oil or coolant leaks. was you having any misfires? smoke could be coming from either coolant leak or oil leak. if its oil it could be your front cam seals or your main seal since you said it was coming from the front of engine.. if its coolant could be your rad or hose. how was your temp was you overheating?
